Sierra
Madre's Older American Of
The Year 2004 - John Grijalva
Older American
Reception, May 7, 2004
John Grijalva Honored
as Older American of the Year
John Grijalva,
the driving force behind the only one in the
world of it's kind Veteran's Memorial Wall,
was recognized as
Sierra Madre's Older American of the Year,
with a reception in his honor.
John has lived here in town since he was 8 years old, and has been
married to his wife Mignon for 54 years. The
Senior Center overflowed with well-wishers
who came to honor John and recognize his contributions to the city of
Sierra Madre, both for the wall, and for his years spearheading the oldtimer's
reunions during the Sierra Madre Pioneer Days celebrations. It
seems especially fitting that Grijalva, with all his work for veterans, and
especially WWII veterans, was honored on May 7, the day the German's
unconditionally surrendered at Reims, France, ending World War II. The
Sierra Madre Senior Community Commission hosted the reception, at which
local dignitaries and long-time friends of John's came forward to pay tribute to
him with written commendations and anecdotes/stories about John.
