Lance Corporal Donald J. Cline, Jr. - (4/14/03) Remains of Former Sierra Madrean Lance Corporal Cline Discovered The Department of Defense announced Sunday it has changed the status of three Marines from Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown (DUSTWUN) to killed in action. They are: Pfc. Tamario D. Burkett, 21, of Buffalo, N.Y. Lance Cpl. Donald J. Cline, Jr., 21, of Sparks, Nev. Pvt. Nolen R. Hutchings, 19, of Boiling Springs, S.C. They were assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, based in Camp Lejeune, NC. They were engaged in operations on the outskirts of An Nasiriyah on March 23. Cline was born and lived in Sierra Madre for 10 years before moving to La Crescenta, and then to Nevada, and still has several relatives in Sierra Madre, including his mother and an aunt. A tearful Hilda Guzman, "Johnny's" aunt, (pictured below with Cline's cousin Devyn) left a voice mail message for the News Net that "They found the remains of my nephew, Johnny's coming home." Cline is survived by his wife Tina and two sons, Dakota, 2, and Dylan, 7 months, and his mother, Cynthia (last name withheld by request). A memorial mass honoring Cline was held in Reno, Nevada for Cline on Sunday morning, for more on that story, visit the KTVN, Reno website. Funeral arrangements are pending, Cline's body is expected to arrive in Nevada in the next few days. Our hearts go out to and our thoughts are with his family. 4/7/03 Lance Corporal Cline Update Here's a link to a Reno TV station website. Corporal Cline's wife spoke with them. Pub. 4/1/03 "Local" Marine Missing in Iraq, 10-Year Old Cousin Takes up Collection for His Family In a Department of Defense press release dated 3/27/03, 10-year Sierra Madre former resident Lance Corporal Donald J. (Johnny) Cline, Jr., 21, was identified as one of eight Marines officially classified as DUSTWHUN (Duty Status, Whereabouts Unknown). The missing Marines were engaged in operations on March 23 in the vicinity of the outskirts of An Nasiriyah in Iraq. Cline is assigned to the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, and is stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Corporal Cline was born here in 1982, and attended Sierra Madre Elementary School, moving away in the 4th grade, about 1992, to La Crescenta. His mother, Cynthia lives here in town. His Aunt Hilda (Guzman), who is also a Sierra Madre resident, called today to let us know that her granddaughter, Devyn Marie Guerrero, 10, of Chino, decided that she needed to do something to help "Johnny," and his family, so she took a shoe box, decorated it in white paper, wrote a letter to "Johnny" stating that he belongs here in America, and along with Madison Cecconi, 11, of Sierra Madre, took it to her Aunt's neighbor's houses on Victoria Lane. Her goal was to raise some money to buy a money order which she would send to Corporal Cline's wife Tina to help pay for diapers, and whatever else Ms. Cline might need, apparently she has been unable to get money from their account since he has been missing. Ms. Guzman reported to me that one of her neighbors, who wished to remain anonymous, contributed six (6) one hundred dollar bills to the fund, which now stands at just over $700. Tina Cline, who lives in Sparks, NV with the Cline's two sons, Dakota, 2, and Dylan, 7 months, stated in an Associated Press story, that she was encouraged by Marine officials who told her three members of her husband's squadron have been found alive. "Every time I look at my oldest son, I feel it in my heart -- I feel it so deeply that he is OK," she told KTVN-TV in Reno. According to Guzman, Dakota and Dylan look just like their father. She said Cline's mother, Cynthia, did not want to comment to the press. According to Guzman, "She lost her husband about two years ago in Nevada, and then moved back here to town, and now this is happening with her only son. She's coping as best she can." Ms. Guzman said that those who wish to contribute to the fund can send donations to the Donald Cline Fund, c/o Hilda Guzman, 83 Victoria Lane, Sierra Madre, CA 91024.
