(7/8/05) SMGSA All-Stars Place 3rd in Statewide Championship The Sierra Madre Girls Softball Association (SMGSA), 14U All Star Team finished in 3rd place at the Cal State Games Championship Tournament held in San Diego July 16, 17. Their record was 4-2 for the tournament. Victories over El Rio Silver, El Rio Gold, Alpine, and Menifee highlighted the weekend, with an extra innings thriller over El Rio Gold putting an exclamation point on their performance. All four of these teams were Champions or Finalists in their respective Districts. Unfortunately, the girls were knocked out of the Winners' semifinal by a tough Montebello Legends team that was also Sierra Madre's nemesis in the District Tournament three weeks prior. After the setback, the girls battled back through the losers' bracket Sunday morning, only to meet Montebello again in the losers' final. The heat and fatigue finally sapped the girls, as they again lost to the Legends. There was so much outstanding play throughout the weekend, that it's difficult to point to one player or event as the best. Madeline Herlache and Michelle Tanner pitched terrifically and Madeline's pitching in the extra innings game versus El Rio Gold certainly stands out as a wonderful performance. On offense, it was a total team contribution. The girls played "small" ball and "big" ball very well and averaged nearly six runs per game. Highlights included a few booming homeruns from Katie Tripoli and Barbara Parker. Defensively, Amanda Mowrey took away several deep hits by the opposition as she roamed centerfield, breaking up potential rallies in the process. Their overall record for the summer tournament season is 21-6, including "friendly" tournament wins. In the process, they won tournament championships in Ventura and Moorpark, took second place in the Southern California Northern District Tournament, and wrapped it up with a third place finish in the Cal State Games Championship Tournament. This is a great accomplishment for SMGSA, especially given the size of the league. Currently, SMGSA awaits word on whether or not it qualified for the 2007 State Games of America that will be held in Colorado. If so, they'll have to compete as a 16U team.
