(7/8/05) SIERRA MADRE GIRLS SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION - 14U ALL STAR TEAM – TOURNAMENT SUMMARY SMGSA’s 14U All Star Team got off to a rocky start at the Walnut Memorial Day Weekend Tournament. After a first game win, keyed by a two out, two on, double by Laura Kelly, they lost their next two games and made an early exit. However, the team rebounded nicely two weeks later at the Ventura Breeze Tournament. The girls went 4-0 en route to the Tournament Championship versus a tough Menifee team. Highlights included a game saving play on a deflected ball by Hannah Meyer to hold the potential winning run at third base in the bottom of the seventh and a three run homer by Maddie Herlache in extra innings to seal the victory. The following week, found the girls in Moorpark for the June Jamboree Tournament. Once again, they put on an awesome show. They mowed through the competition with a combined four game score of 50-13, including a mercy win in the semi-finals, where not one of the girls struck out the entire game. The Championship Game found them pitted against the La Canada team. Solid pitching by Maddie Herlache and Michelle Tanner, plus an absolute bomb of a grand slam by Katie Tripoli led them to a 13-5 victory. The girls then headed to their District Tournament June 25-27, in La Puente. A 22-1 victory over El Monte, including home runs, with a few grand slams mixed in, by Maddie Herlache, Amanda Mowrey, Barbara Parker, and Katie Tripoli led the way. Unfortunately, the girls spent all their big hits, as the next game, against a tough Montebello team, resulted in a 3-1 loss and a trip to the loser’s bracket for Sunday. The girls got going early Sunday morning and battled through three games against Fullerton, Upland, and San Dimas to make it back to the Championship round, thanks to great pitching by Maddie and Michelle, coupled with timely and effective hitting by the rest of the crew. Once again, they met up with Montebello, and despite a valiant effort, the girls finally ran out of gas after four back to back games, in a 5-4 loss. The 2nd place finish at District has qualified them for the State Championships in San Diego, July 15-17 as part of the Cal State Games. The team will get to join athletes from all over the state, competing in different sports, and parade thru Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego. It's conducted in similar fashion to the Olympics...with entertainment, an aerial demonstration by the Navy Seals Parachute Team, the lighting of the torch, and wrapped up with a fireworks show. They hope to represent the City of Sierra Madre and SMGSA with pride, poise, and athleticism in what will certainly be a tough tournament.
