Rotary Club Hosts CalTech Development Officer

Tuesday, Aug. 12

Rotary Club Hosts CalTech Development Officer  This week's Rotary meeting featured guest speaker Bruce Rise of CalTech.  Bruce is also a Rotarian, a member of the Atwater/Silver Lake organization.  Bruce discussed the recent purchase of St. Luke's Hospital by CalTech, as well as providing facts and information about the University.  He also brought a very well produced and informative video about all the school has to offer. Rise said that the intent behind the purchase of the Hospital is to build a state of the art research facility, kind of a JPL for the rest of the University, and that the name "Center for Innovative Technology" is currently under consideration.  The site will also house the largest telescope in the world.   Part of the location will be leased out, including the continuation of a lucrative contract for the filming of the TV series ER.  The school, begun in 1891, has about 900 undergrad students, and approximately 1100 grad students.  Including emeritus professors, the faculty numbers 1200.  Currently, the ratio of men students to women is 2 to 1, with women having first been admitted to the school in 1970.  He noted that there are 29 Nobel Laureates on the faculty, as well as 47 National Medal of Science winners. He also pointed out that the university has only 20,000 living alumni, significantly less than most universities of its stature, thus the need for "development," or solicitation of funding.   Recently, the school received a large gift from Gordon Moore, president of Intel.  The school's budget of $500 million is funded 3% through tuition, 28% through gifts and endowments, 52% through grants and contracts, and 17% through other sources.  Approximately 40% of the budget is academic, and 40% of the budget is research.

Also at the meeting, Denis Keegan gave a two-year update regarding his kidney transplant, (he's doing fine, and his brother IS a better dancer) and Dan Alle gave a report from the Membership Committee updating the members about its efforts.  Jennie Jacobsen-Huse and Rob Stockly gave a report on Rotary's efforts toward ACS Relay for Life in September, and Bill Coburn of The Coburn Group was recognized as  a "Friend" of Rotary for The Coburn Group's promotion and coverage of Rotary events through the last couple years, including promotion at the Gold Line opening for the recent "Elvis" and "Buddy Holly" Concert in the Park.

Rotary President Rudy Hayek applauds the organization's hard work on the recent Concert in the Park, reported to have grossed $4,000.00
