Kersting Court Anti-War Protests We're taking photos to see if the protests get larger or smaller each week. Week 1, 2/3/03 - Estimate 15-20 people Anti-War Rally Draws Honks and Waves From Kersting Court Area Drivers Stopped by to check out the rally against a war in Iraq at Kersting Court, and found about 15-20 women and children with posters and placards saying No Iraq War. They said they are going to be doing this for the next several Mondays, between 5 and 6, and they invite the public to join them in protesting the march to war. Click on the photos to see them larger. Note the Kersting Court flag at half mast to honor the shuttle astronauts Week 2, 2/10/03 - Estimate 35-40 people Anti-War Rally Last Night Nearly Double in Size From Last Week Stopped by to check out the rally against a war in Iraq at Kersting Court, and found about 35-40 men, women and children with posters and placards saying No Iraq War. They said they are going to be doing this for the next several Mondays, between 5 and 6, and they invite the public to join them in protesting the march to war. Click on the photos to see them larger. We think it will be interesting to see if it continues to grow. Week 3, 2/17/03 - Did not make it by Week 4, 2/24/03 - Estimate 40 people Anti-War Rally Forty activists rallied in Kersting Court last Monday night to oppose the war in Iraq. This is the fourth week the group has met on Monday between 5 and 6, and last night was definitely the largest group we've seen (we missed the third week). Horns honked regularly from passing cars, presumably to show support, though some undoubtedly were friends acknowledging the sighting of a friend. One of the peaceniks with whom we spoke stated that he had protested for peace in the Vietnam era, and that he found the amazing thing about this weekly rally is that it had just sprung up as a total grass roots effort. Timing was in the ralliers favor, at 5:59, as they started to carry their signs off to their transportation home, the sprinkling began. Have an alternative of your own to suggest? Week 5, 3/3/03 - Estimate 25-30 people Anti-War Rally There were less than thirty activists rallying in Kersting Court last night to oppose the war in Iraq. This is the fifth week the group has met on Monday between 5 and 6, and last night was definitely a smaller, but more vocal group than last week's group, as several in the group actively sought participation from traffic by yelling "Honk for Peace." Horns did honk regularly from passing cars, possibly to show support, though some undoubtedly were friends acknowledging the sighting of a friend. Not everyone agreed with the protesters though: as I stood there taking photos, a man pulled over by the curb and shouted at me "Ask them if any of them ever fought for their country. You didn't!!" Then he drove away. The man was obviously a psychic, as I was never, in fact, in the service. Another protestor driving by yelled out "Support your servicemen!!" To which several peaceniks replied "We are!" The prolonged threat of war and the protests against it may be taking its toll, as differences seems to be manifesting themselves with a little more hostility. The first week, I was asked by one gentleman who disagreed with the protestors "Are they offering some kind of alternative to deal with the situation?' The next week, a gentleman who disagreed with the protestors spoke to me across the street, stating that he understood their right to protest, and he wished we could have peace, "but you're dealing with a madman, and you can't negotiate with a madman. If we don't get him out now, it's going to be worse." However, last night, as opposed to the reasoned discussion I'd had with those who disagree with the peaceniks in the above conversations, some of those in opposition were openly angry. I'm almost a little surprised there hasn't been a Kersting Court opposition rally of support for the war, put together by those who feel the peaceniks are off target. But then, it's generally the proponents of peace who are more inclined to rally and be vocal first. I should say also, that I believe the gentleman in the El Camino in video 2 was actually in agreement with the protestors, though I didn't hear all that was said, and despite the fact that the video makes it appear otherwise. Use our Community Bulletin Board Page to speak out and let your feelings be known on this issue. Agree, disagree? We want to know how you feel. Week 6, 3/10/03 - Estimate 40 people Anti-War Rally Nearly forty activists rallied in Kersting Court last night to oppose the war in Iraq, including many new faces, larger signs, and generating a lot more "honking for peace." This is the sixth week the group has met on Monday between 5 and 6. Week 7, 3/17/03 - Estimate 40 people Anti-War Rally Nearly forty activists rallied in Kersting Court last M night to oppose the war in Iraq, including many new faces, larger signs, and generating a lot more "honking for peace." This is the 7th week the group has met on Monday between 5 and 6. I've finally decided to give my opinion, with an E-ditorial on the Iraq crisis. Read it here. Week 8, 3/24/03 - Did not make it to the rally Week 9, 3/31/03 - Estimate 20 - 25 people Peace Rallies Continue, As Does the War Monday night at Kersting Court, there was a smaller crowd, but it seemed to be made up of people who were more dedicated to the cause than in previous weeks. Despite the earnestness of those who gather each week, the war carries on, as evidenced by the article in the column to the left about missing former Sierra Madrean Donald Cline, Jr. I'm guestimating about 20-25 people once things got warmed up. We've been following the rallies growth or shrinkage, though we've missed a couple weeks. |
