Sierra Madre Centennial Ends With a Flourish - Saturday event pictures and video

By Bill Coburn

The “Official” Sierra Madre Centennial events came to an end last weekend with several activities that kept residents busy all weekend long.  The weekend kicked off at 8am Saturday morning with a 5K Historic Walk, sponsored by the Civic Club, which resurrected the event that had been a part of Pioneer Days activities in the late 1990s.  Nearly 100 people participated in the leisurely, purposely un-timed walk, which passed by more than two dozen historic Sierra Madre sites such as the Hotel Shirley, Emile Deutsch Cigar Factory, Pasadena Hunting Lodge, Jameson House and many more.

Shortly thereafter, at 10am, the Open House/Pioneer Days at E. Waldo Ward and Son kicked off, There were antique cars (gasoline and electric) on display, vendors featuring their hand-crafted works including old-time lace making, whittled wood work, and origami, live strolling old-time western musical performances by the Tumbling Tumbleweeds, tours of the Ward Ranch bottling factory and the Ward Ranch museum, and several quick-draw shooting exhibitions by  local shooting champion Jon Wilson.

At 11am, the “treasures” of Sierra Madre, aka “the old-timers’ gathered at Memorial Park to peruse photos and photo albums, and reminisce amongst themselves about Sierra Madre in the old days.  Several of the old-timers remembered back into the 1920s, and some came from as far away as Florida to greet old friends and share their memories.  The event was organized by John Grijalva, who has been communicating by letter and telephone for months to bring these folks back together.  This event was a two day event, with a repeat on Sunday.

At 2pm, the Sierra Madre Community Foundation held a dedication ceremony at the World War I cannon, recently refurbished and re-mounted in the Northeast corner of Memorial Park.  The choir from Sierra Madre Congregational Church performed several patriotic songs, former foundation President and cannon refurbishment leader Jay Whitcraft spoke and thanked and remembered those who helped with the restoration, and current Foundation president Mary Katherine Kelly also spoke and thanked those involved with the restoration.

Later in the evening, an event that was not an official part of the Centennial celebration, but which was attended by many of those who attended the other activities, closed out the busy day as Bingo Boy and Red Hot Willem called Bingo as part of the Legendary Bingo fundraising event held by the Sierra Madre Rose Float Association twice each year.
