K-9 Assistance Services, Inc. Dog Walk Fundraiser in Bailey Canyon Park Saturday, May 17, 2003
K-9 Assistance Services, Inc. Fundraiser at Bailey Canyon Park Raises Needed Funds for Training of Dog for Ailing Boy, Draws Fox News Coverage K-9 Assistance Services held a Dog Hike Fundraiser Saturday at Bailey Canyon Park . They were raising funds to pay for an Assistance Dog for an 11-1/2 yr old boy with Myasthenia Gravis, a rare incurable disease that effects the nerve/muscle junction (Read Eric's heart-wrenching story here). About twenty people and 8-10 dogs showed up for the walk through beautiful Bailey Canyon Park. During his interview with Fox, Eric stated that he hoped the dog would help him with his illness, and stated that a dog is like another member of the family, "Like another brother or sister, but with more hair." Eric's dad Mike said that he was hoping that the dog would help to energize Eric, to help him when his illness was getting to him. Eric read a letter thanking his family and friends for sticking by him through his illness, and thanking K-9 ASI's owner Jeremy Talamantes and Administrator Debbie Abel for selecting him to receive the dog, Niklas. Niklas is still being trained, and it will be about 6 months before he is ready to be turned over to Eric. According to Talamantes, it costs about $8,000 to board and train the dog for assistance, and fundraisers such as this, with the increased awareness that comes with television news coverage, should raise about $3,000 of that cost. Fox News reporter Sam Kaplan was there, and Fox News produced a one minute, 15 second piece that aired on Fox News at Ten, about 10:35pm Saturday. Why did K-9 Assistance hold their event in Bailey Canyon, drawing a news crew to Sierra Madre? In an e-mail to the News Net, K-9 ASI's administrator Debbie Abel told us: "The pictures on your site of the park was one of the deciding factors for choosing this beautiful place!" Here are our pictures of the fundraiser, click on them to see them larger.
