Wednesday, March 4th was Media Day at the Wistaria Vine. Many people are under the mistaken impression the Vine owners, the Solts and the Dorrances, only open their properties one day a year, but in fact, their property is also opened for Docent Training Day and Media Day. Prior to Media Day, a 16-page electronic press kit was sent to more than two dozen print press news desks, seven television news desks, two internet news sites, and three radio news desks, inviting them to the property to view the vine, meet with the property owners, the town historian, and City and Chamber representatives. Beantown provided coffee, muffins and pastries at no charge as a donation to the Chamber. Mayor Zimmerman was a last minute cancellation, but City Manager Elaine Aguilar filled in in his absence. Media representatives from Beacon Media (Arcadia, Sierra Madre and Monrovia Weeklies and Pasadena Independent), Mountain Views Observer, and the Pasadena Star News were on hand from print media. Sierra Madre News Net was there as well from the internet side of things. KCAL 9's Cater Lee was on hand with John, her cameraman. In addition to the "continental breakfast," media on hand received a hard copy of the press kit that had been sent earlier by e-mail, as well as a tri-fold flier with the history of the vine and the music schedule, copies of the three Wistaria postcards the Chamber was selling at the festival this year, and two VIP passes for the shuttle, good at any time on the day of the event. It was raining much of the morning. Nonetheless, photographers shot their pictures, and reporters interviewed the property owners and Phyllis Chapman. KCAL 9 decided to stay at the site until their noon news broadcast, and did a remote broadcast from the site complete with recorded footage of the vine and the interviews they had conducted. The ninety second piece aired on at least three Channel Nine broadcasts that day, and all or part of the footage was used by Channel 2 News and KFWB news radio.
