Wistaria Day, 2007 Sunday, March 25, 2007
Wistaria Festival Site of Surprise Engagement By Susannah Tomlin and Bill Coburn
Sunday’s Wistaria Festival was the site of a very special surprise. Todd Francone, who works as an editor for Technicolor and who lives in Sierra Madre, had called friends and family and asked them to meet him on Baldwin Ave. and Sierra Madre Blvd. at 12 noon during Sierra Madre’s annual Wistaria Festival.
He was at the assigned location with his girlfriend of nine years, Laura Hirsh, owner of Skin Care & Body Day Spa, a small business in Sierra Madre. Laura had a booth set up at that corner promoting her store. Todd and Laura met in 1998, while attending Cal State Monterey Bay, both majoring in film editing. They were working on a graduation film for a fellow student. One thing led to another and they began dating. After graduation, they moved to Sierra Madre in 2001.
Right at noon, Todd took Laura to the center of the street and got on one knee (see photo below), pulled out a ring and asked Laura to marry him, as friends and family looked on, cheering and shouting encouragement. It took Laura a minute to realize that many of the people in the crowd were friends and family that had gathered and to realize she knew most of the people that were there. There were some lucky Wistaria goers who had the opportunity to look in on this special moment.
According to Laura, Todd had some help from a good friend of hers, Sunny Hawks, who had suggested the Wistaria Festival as the right time and place for him to pop the question. “Wistaria day is my favorite day of the year,’ says Laura. If it wasn’t before, it will certainly be now. Todd and Laura are planning a fall wedding.
