Youngest Trail Racer Back for Third Year
"Every time I set foot on the trail it is my instinct to run," Miranda Stiver shares about what has driven her to compete in the challenging Mt. Wilson Trail Race for the past three years and why she continues to love every minute. Stiver has proven herself to be a well-trained and dedicated athlete, but the wisdom and personal growth she has found in her many competitions may be worth more than any medal or trophy could bring her. As she explains, "You always want to chase your dreams."
Just who is this zen master, trail
runner? She's an amazingly articulate, enthusiastic and c It may seem like an intense activity for such a young girl, but running and athletic competition is clearly the way Miranda expresses her appreciation for life and the world around her. When she was only five she finished City of Hope's 5K charity run in honor of her grandmother, to whom she was very close, who was battling cancer at the time. Her grandmother has since passed away but Miranda continues to participate in the event. "I think that's a bond that she keeps through running," shares proud father Brian Stiver who has been right beside her on every trail run and on the sidelines for her games with her Gold Level soccer team. Miranda admits that her first Mt. Wilson Trail Race was a bit intimidating, but she says the nerves disappear once she finds her running rhythm. She leaves each race not only having had fun but with renewed self-confidence and energy. "I think the future of the Trail Race is these kids," Brian Stiver says. And he believes the discipline that it takes to compete in this type of race or on a championship level team has benefitted Miranda in all aspects of her life. "Athletics really help support good habits. You see it in her studies. She's an honor roll student." But it's not all about winning or losing for Miranda. It's about giving it a shot, daring yourself to try and appreciating the opportunities you have. "I definitely value that I'm able to run on such a beautiful trail," she say with a smile on her face and a nervous energy that seems to be itching to head to the starting line.
