On Your Mark, Get Set, Go… to the Mt. Wilson Trail Race
Competitors should stick to their training schedules and fans should count on a whole day of fun as plans are moving forward for the running of this year's Mt. Wilson Trail Race on Saturday, May 24.
Trail Race Committee members have been hard at work assessing any damage done to the trail by the recent wildfires in the hills above Sierra Madre and getting to work on any repairs to ensure a safe and enjoyable race for all – from the most advanced runners to the first-timers. In addition, they are focusing on making this year's event a tribute to what the town just survived and all the people who fought to protect the community from the flames.
It was 100 years ago that Sierra Madrean and prominent sportsman Charles J. Fox dreamed up the idea of a race up the oldest hiking trail on this side of the San Gabriel Mountains, a celebration of outdoor athleticism right in his own backyard. Since then the Mt. Wilson Trail Race has lived a long and storied life, and this year it will add a special new chapter as a symbol of tenacity and community spirit for recently tested and triumphant foothill village.
The festivities kick-off on Friday night before the race with the traditional Pasta Feed dinner in Kersting Court. Don’t think you have to be a racer to carbo load. Everyone is invited to join the fun and say "Buon Apetito" over a hearty dinner provided by Café 322.
The table will be set for 6 p.m. and dinner costs $6.75 per person. Most importantly, the proceeds from this event are given to the renowned Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team. At 7 p.m. official race starter and trail historian, John Robinson, will be on hand to share some tall tales and fun facts about Mt. Wilson Trail, and, as event chair Pete Siberell put it, give runners something else to think about other than the pain on their way up the mountain the next day.
The charitable spirit will continue through race day. The Trail Race Committee has decided that proceeds from this year's first ever Trail Race Beer Garden will go into the recently established Santa Anita Fire Fund, set up through the Sierra Madre Community Foundation to help the city pay for the costs of fighting the fires.
The Mt. Wilson Trial race is presented by the volunteer Mt. Wilson Trail Race Committee, the Sierra Madre Community & Personnel Services Department, the Sierra Madre Civic Club, and the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team.
