Darlene Crook -- Children's Champion

When you read Darlene Crook's "resume," you realize that she is an advocate for children. Children's welfare is uppermost in Darlene's life which makes her a champion of children.

As a docent for years for Eaton Canyon Nature Center, Darlene taught kids from all over L.A. County about the canyon and everything it had to offer: the animals, their habits and habitats, and of the plants that Native Americans used years ago in their everyday lives.

"Many of these children would never have known these experiences without the Eaton Canyon hikes," Darlene said.

Another of Darlene's favorite activities was helping kids take advantage of RIF (Reading Is Fundamental), a national organization. Second graders in the Pasadena School System learn reading skills, taught by docents such as Darlene, with books donated by the Pasadena schools. "Children even get to keep the books which they have read," Darlene pointed out.

The Sierra Madrean also coached baseball and soccer when the five Crook children were little. She was a Camp Fire leader in Sierra Madre and assisted with Girl Scouts.

But her volunteerism doesn't stop there. Darlene has delivered Meals-on-Wheels for 15 years and works on the Friends of the Library Winetasting Committee. She is an active member of Civic Club (this year working on Huck Finn Day) and assists at the Friends of the Library Art Fair in May. She also finds time to participate in the Wistaria Festival in March.

During much of her life (for 12 years) she was a sought-after caterer, assisting several clubs around town with their meals. This year she and Marlene Enmark will cater the Civic Club's April luncheon, the club's largest fundraiser of the year. People are already scrambling for tickets; they know how Marlene and Darlene cook. Still another sidebar of her life was singing with the Sweet Adelines, a very popular vocal group in the area. For 22 years she sang bass with the group.

Darlene is a native Californian, having been born in Huntington Hospital. She graduated from Monrovia High School and attended PCC. It was there that she met her husband, Richard, who went on to become a geologist and still works as a consultant.

The Crooks have a son and four daughters, will all but one daughter living in California. And that daughter is moving back to California this year. There are six grandchildren, and the whole family enjoys camping together. They are able to do that often, Darlene said.

"I really enjoy being with people, and I urge others to volunteer because they'll get more out of every event if they do. I've just never been bored because I like keeping busy."
