A writer acting on a bet holes himself away in Baldpate Inn, a long train ride away from New York. His task is to write a complete novel in 24 hours. Baldpate would seem an ideal location to work: it’s isolated and shut down for the winter, so Magee the writer would be free from distractions. Settled into the place with the aid of a caretaker and his wife, Magee is ready to go to work when it becomes plain that this inn which supposedly has only one key actually has seven, and intruders will make it an uneasy night for Magee. Interlopers involved in a scheme that involves political scandal, bribery, theft, double-crossing and murder will plunge Magee headlong into a mystery that he never expected. Nobody is who they seem. Oh, yes. Magee falls suddenly and deeply in love with an attractive reporter on the trail of a scoop. Can Magee bring the wrongdoers to justice? Will he win the heart of the lovely Mary? Will he win his $5,000 bet? “Seven Keys To Baldpate” was a smash hit when first produced on Broadway in 1913. It was written by George M. Cohan (1878-1942), producer, dramatist and Broadway star who ultimately achieved his greatest fame as a writer of patriotic songs (“Over There,” “Yankee Doodle Dandy,” “You’re A Grand Old Flag”). “Seven Keys to Baldpate” was based on a novel by Earl Derr Biggers, best known for writing the Charlie Chan mystery novels. Some may consider “Seven Keys to Baldpate” to be old-fashioned, which suits the Sierra Madre audience just fine. But the play was influential enough to influence later mysteries which borrowed elements from it, such as “April Fools’ Day” and Stephen King’s “The Shining.” John Lewis Lozes directs the Sierra Madre Playhouse production. The recipient of a Master’s degree in stage direction, he trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. He has directed and acted in well over 100 productions in his career. Locally, he has been active at Granada Theatre for fifteen years, and at Sierra Madre Playhouse, acted in “Murder on the Nile” and “Bus Stop.” The cast of “Seven Keys to Baldpate” includes (in alphabetical order): Bernie Baima, Dan Bullard, Candyce Columbus, Allen Corcorran, Roni Corcorran, Jim Follet, Brad Kahn, Richard Leppig, Don Melton, Brandy Mettert, Jane Park, Nadine Rondinella, Barry Schwam and George F. ONLINE TICKETING: www.sierramadreplayhouse.org (1/4/05) “AN INVISIBLE MAN” Can be Seen at Sierra Madre Playhouse on Jan. 16, 23 To oversimplify, a countertenor is a guy who sings in a really, really high register. R. Christofer Sands won the Ovation Award and the L.A. Weekly Award for his work in the musical “Pinafore!” a couple seasons back. His show “An Invisible Man…” takes the audience on a journey of a faceless, struggling performer (Chris) attempting to get work in musical theatre….with the added ability of being a countertenor----a commodity in opera, classical music and concerts, but sadly ignored in musical theatre. (Chris can sing four-and-a-half octaves.) It also helps to educate the audience as to what is a countertenor; what makes a countertenor. The songs Chris sings in the show are Broadway musical style songs and cover many styles from the late 1800s to 2004. He performs the music of Jeff Blumenkrantz, Lou (Vitacco) Briggs, John Bucchino, Vernon Duke, Stephen Flaherty, Jack Lattimer, Steve Marzullo, Sir Arthur Sullivan, and Kurt Weill. Ron Snyder is Chris’ accompanist. Snyder has previously accompanied Jim Bailey, Melanie Griffith, and currently tours with Rita McKenzie in “Ethel Merman’s Broadway.” He was musical director for “Pinafore!” WHAT: “An Invisible Man, or The Miss-Adventures of a Countertenor in Musical Theatre,” a new musical entertainment.
