Pioneer Days Whiskers Contest Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003
Saturday night during the Rotary Tri-tip dinner, a break was taken by the deejay to allow the Whiskers Contest to take place. No one had entered the contest clean-shaven, so the only part of the contest held was an existing whiskers contest. Both beards and mustaches were eligible. From a field of 7 contestants, audience applause was used to reduce the competition to three. Then a clap-off was held to picks a first and second place winner from those three contestants. The winner was Ty Gaffney, principal of Sierra Madre School, who donated his $100 cash award to the school. Second place went to Brent Bartlett, a member of the SM Volunteer Fired Department, who received a $25 gift certificate donated by Arnold's Frontier Hardware. Third place went to Jerry Carlton who received the admiration of those in attendance.....The Whiskers Contest was again co-sponsored by Briana Salon and The Coburn Group, with an assist from Arnold's Frontier Hardware.
