Random Observations by Pat Ostrye Please, Somebody Do Something!! Self-proclaimed writers, like me, cannot resist the opportunity to say "something" about whatever is making the current headlines. Certainly the Pennsylvania Primary has been making headlines for the past six weeks and, from what I've seen in the Opinion pages and on TV, I'm the only one in the nation that thinks this past two years of primaries has been one charade after another and is winding down as a useless effort at futility. Why on earth can't there be just one National Primary, say in June of election year, thereby foregoing oneupsmanship and future political chaos, as we have had for the past two years. One more time I shout that caucuses should be outlawed altogether. It is beyond comprehension how anyone can compare a caucus to a Primary, but "they" do and get away with it! Also, repeating myself, why do we need so many debates?! Even before it came down to just two eligible candidates on the Democrat side and the one survivor on the Republican side, we were fed two or more every week, each candidate aiming to spout what he/she thinks the electorate wants to hear, in various degrees of faux sincerity, opportunistic timeliness and countrified showmanship. What's left for the normally-anticipated last two months preceding the Big Day on November 4th?! Then there's the money. As it is the country is unnecessarily at war on two fronts, costing trillions that could have been used for our own youngsters' educations, desperately needed healthcare in all corners of the country, jobs, jobs, jobs and affordable housing everywhere. To say nothing of over 4000 lives lost and thousands of wounded in all of the veterans' hospitals. So, where's the common sense in spending millions and millions to prove what in choosing the best-qualified to run for the Top Job, while dragging it out over a two-year period?! Think about it, if there had been one Primary, we wouldn't still be faced with another five weeks of debating and throwing millions more down the drain, before we even get to the convention and the nuts and bolts of that final partisan show-down. While I'm at all of this ranting, we could save another million or so by having only "voting by mail" as Oregon has done successfully for years, its many advantages and savings too obvious to go through again. It will happen but I may be long gone before at least one Washington legislator has the courage and foresight to start the ball rolling. Before 2010 when we have another go at the Governors and many state legislators, somebody among the powers that be, step up to the plate and do Something to change this antiquated system of electing our governing body! postrye@netzero.com |
