Older American Of The Year 2003 - Joy-Louise Harte Smith Older American Reception, May 2, 2003
Joy-Louise Harte Smith Honored at Reception Joy-Louise Harte Smith, longtime Sierra Madre volunteer, activist, and City Government watchdog, was honored as Sierra Madre's Older American of the Year for 2003. The reception took place at the Senior Center. Joy-Louise was chosen for this honor for her patriotic activities that include being co-chair of the Kersting Court Flag Committee and a member of the Commission on the Aging, Inc. for two terms. Joy-Louise, who is 81 and was born on the Fourth of July, is now confined to a rest home and was unable to attend the reception, at which Mayor Bart Doyle spoke and thanked Joy-Louise for her many efforts on behalf of the City. Her longtime neighbor Lorel Harvey and his daughter, Lorie Harvey both got up and spoke, with Lorie recounting some biographical moments for the 40 or more in attendance. Several others got up and recounted stories about Joy-Louise, and a videotape was made to be taken to Joy-Louise at a later date. Several speakers recalled that you always knew where you stood with Joy-Louise, and as Bart Doyle said, "sometimes even if you didn't want to." Lorel Harvey noted that he had frequently been called on to fix things for Joy-Louise, and had been told by Joy-Louise that she had had three husbands "two that she had married and him." He said she told him "You don't have bedroom privileges, but you've got everything else." Lorie Harvey spoke about Joy-Louise being picked up in a limo at her home in Hastings on the Hudson and driven all the way to New York where she had been engaged at a reception honoring one of her heroes, Gen. Douglas McArthur. She stated that Joy-Louise had had many singing engagements including the Hippodrome, which coincidentally, opened 150 years ago the day of the reception for Joy-Louise. She recalled that Joy-Louise had introduced her to many aspects of the arts, and recalled a special night when Joy-Louise had arranged front row seats at "The King and I" with Yul Brynner. She stated that Joy-Louise had been active with many animal-rights groups, donating to many causes, and that Joy-Louise had "adopted" many of the Harvey's cats.
