Huck Finn Fishing Derby, 2007

Huck Finn Campout, Derby a “Reel” Good Time

By Bill Coburn

Sierra Madre’s Community Services and Personnel Department reported that about 200 kids participated in the Huck Finn Fishing Derby on Saturday.  They estimate that the total number of kids and parents that participated in the Derby, the second annual Huck Finn Campout the evening before, and family fishing on Sunday, was approximately 500.

Thanks to a generous donation from the Sierra Madre Volunteer Fireman’s Association, this year the City Yards settling basins were stocked with 800 pounds of rainbow trout, an increase of 100 pounds over previous years, and the most fish ever made available to Sierra Madre’s youngsters.

For the second year in a row, there was a campout held the night before the Derby, and all 40 campsites were reserved two weeks prior to the event, before the cut off date.  So next year, be sure to make your reservations early, or you’ll miss out!

The Community and Personnel Services Department is grateful to the sponsors and volunteers who made this event possible, including: Sierra Madre Volunteer Firefighters Association, Sierra Madre Civic Club, Sierra Madre Kiwanis Club, Sierra Madre Public Works Department, Sierra Madre Community Services Commission, Sierra Madre Interact Club, Danny Osti Tree Services, the Buccaneer Lounge, Tim Osti, and Chris and Ian Campbell.
