Dedication of London Plane Sycamore Tree in Honor of Jim Heasley April 25, 2003
On April 25, 2003 (Arbor Day), friends, family and City staff turned out to honor Jim Heasley, former mulepacker, firefighter, and local legend who was the 2002 Sierra Madre Older American of the Year, and who passed away on July 19, 2002 at the age of 86 (for our story on Jim's Memorial Service, click here). Jim's wife Barbara and son Russ were there, as were many of the people who had been friends with Jim over his long life. Dr. Bill White, who spent many Saturday mornings with Jim up at Lizzie's Trail Inn, got up and spoke about Jim's amazing memory, and how he had used that memory to be a link for all of us, to the early days of Sierra Madre. Among those in attendance were several of the friends with whom Jim used to have coffee at Corfu early Tuesday morning, as well as Mayor Doug Hayes, City Manager Tammy Gates, Council Member Tonja Torres, SM Community Foundation President Jay Whitcraft, Ruth and Karl Teigler, John Grijolva, Maurice Orme (whose mother once owned Lizzie's), Director of Public Works Bruce Inman, Susie McConnell, Carol Canterbury, Jeannie Frederick, Caroline Brown, and others.
