Frosty Arrives in Kersting Court December 31, 2007
Frosty Comes to Town By Bill Coburn
A lot of people were wondering why there was no snowman in Kersting Court before Christmas, as there has been for 19 consecutive years. I was one of them.
Andrew Graper, Dave Forrester and Augie Beck have been building a snowman downtown since 1988. Or a combination of any of them, for instance Andrew couldn’t make it last year, so Dave and Augie did it, this year Augie couldn’t make it, so Dave and Andrew kept it going. Originally, he arrived on the night of the candlelight walk but more recently he’s been coming in on Christmas Eve.
Andrew and Augie now live in Pioneer Town, though Dave’s still local. But the tradition continues. Andrew said he drove down on Christmas Eve to put the snowman up, but the source of the “snow” was already closed for the holiday. So he decided to spend the week locally and they put the snowman up on New Year’s Eve, when a big crowd would be downtown to view the Rose Float as it made its way to the parade route.
As always, the kids were excited about the opportunity to see a snowman. “Mommy, it’s real, it’s a real snowman, you can touch it, it’s cold!” was the cry of one youngster. Many of the kids each year have never seen a real snowman, so Frosty’s arrival, even a little late, was another one of those Mayberry moments that makes this town such a great place to live. No word on whether a new date tradition has started, we’ll have to wait and see.
