Candlelight Walk
Several hundred turned out to sing Christmas Carols and participate in a candlelight procession, starting at St. Rita's and winding up at Kersting Court. Fr. Richard Krekelberg opened the evening with a prayer at St. Rita's and the crowd began its walk down Baldwin Ave. to Kersting Court. Ken Walker led the throng in song once it had reached Kersting Court, where they joined the combined Church Choirs of Bethany, St. Rita's and Sierra Madre Congregational Church. Children were invited to the front so they could observe the placing of the baby Jesus in the manger. Readings from the gospel were read by members of the clergy from several Sierra Madre churches. The evening was emceed by the Rev. Richard Anderson of Sierra Madre Congregational Church, who introduced Fr. Patrick Brennan of Mater Dolorosa, Fr. Michael Bamberger of the Episcopal Church of the Ascension, Revs. Bill and Geri Parish of the Foothill Enrichment Center, Rev. Cynthia Crowell of Trinity Presbyterian Church, Dr. Phil Carlson of Bethany Church of Sierra Madre, and Rev. Holly Reinhart-Marean of SM United Methodist Church. Tifffany Trypucko and Nathan Kress portrayed Mary and Joseph during the placement of the baby. After the readings and the ceremony were through, Denis and Karen Keegan of Savor the Flavor turned on a "snow-making" machine, which used soap bubbles to represent snow falling from the roof. Every child there knew that it was soap, not snow, yet they jumped and played in the falling white stuff like there was no tomorrow. For the kids, it was a big hit.
