Sierra Madre School Excels at Math Field Day Saturday, March 29, 2008

Math Field Day is a yearly math competition that every school in the Pasadena Unified School District (PUSD) participates in. Students in grades 4-9 compete by taking four different exams (Statistics & Probability, Number Sense, Geometry, Problem Solving). Students work in teams of four, and each grade level can send an A team and a B team. Students are awarded gold, silver and bronze medals within each category. Teams are honored for their overall scores as well.
This year the event was held at Blair High School, and every school in the district participated. Sierra Madre School sent two teams from each grade level, 4-8 (10 teams in all). And the Sierra Madre teams did quite well, with 4th Grade winning 1st and 2nd Place overall, 5th Grade took 3rd Place overall, 6th Grade captured 1st and 2nd overall, 7th Grade took 1st and 2nd place overall and 8th Grade won first place overall. The teachers for the teams were: 4th & 5th grade: Natasha Comer & Kim Sibbrel; 6th grade: Christine Cadore; 7th grade: Armen Antonian and 8th grade: Dan Martinez.
Forty Sierra Madre School students participated in total.
Sierra Madre has participated in the elementary competition for several years and just recently joined the Middle School ranks. Over the past three years, its 6th grade has placed 1st overall two times, and its 7th & 8th grade teams have placed first overall three years in a row.
Each of the 4 first place teams will now move on to a similar competition at the county level. |
