Cumquat Publisher Snider Found Dead Jan. 17, 2008 Police Chief Marilyn Diaz has confirmed for us that Jim Snider was found dead on Thursday in his home. Responding to an inquiry from the News Net Thursday evening, Diaz said "Police officers were called to an apartment in the 1st 100 block of S. Lima this afternoon in response to a call from a landlord who had not seen his tenant in over a week. Police found a deceased man inside. The Coroner's Office responded to handle the case." In a follow-up phone conversation Friday evening, Chief Diaz stated that at the time of Thursday night's e-mail, next of kin had not been notified so she could not confirm the deceased's identity. Asked if rumors that Snider had committed suicide were accurate, Diaz stated that the coroner's office was conducting an investigation, but that it appeared Snider had been dead for some time. She stated that no note had been found, though she was unsure if the computer files had been searched for a note. She stated that she had not examined the body, and could not confirm or deny whether there were any self-inflicted wounds. She said more would be known when the coroner's investigation was complete. She added that the results of toxicology texts could take several weeks. Snider was a controversial figure in Sierra Madre after starting the Sierra Madre Cumquat, a satirical website that commented irreverently about issues in Sierra Madre. Formerly an animator for Disney, Snider seemingly came out of nowhere to have an immediate impact on the local political scene, and was the subject of scorn and ridicule from speakers at City Council meetings who took offense at his writings, many of which were blatantly untrue. |
