Steamers Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Saturday, Sept. 8, 2007
After a soft opening early in July, Sierra Madre’s newest coffee house, Steamers, hosted a big Grand Opening party on Saturday September 8th, featuring live music, raffles, special discounts, free coffee tasting, and samples of their delicious pastries. A ribbon cutting ceremony was also conducted by the Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce.
The former home of Toy and Patio, and for the last many years the home of RC Modeler magazine, 142 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. is now the home of Steamers, described as “A comfortable, family friendly coffee house, welcoming guests of all generations.”
The beverage menu at Steamers features, of course, their premium coffees and espressos (regular and decaf), supplemented by non-coffee options such as smoothies in a variety of flavors, gourmet hot and iced teas, Chai tea, frozen “hot chocolate”, classic hot chocolate, & steamed cider. Also available are the shop’s namesake, Steamers (a hot flavored milk drink) and Italian sodas, unique bottled sodas, juices, and waters. In addition to the already prepared brews Steamers serves, you can also pick up bulk coffee beans that they have available for sale.
The food menu at Steamers features pastries, desserts and cookies, selected from premium local bakers, as well as select pastries baked exclusively for Steamers. You can also pick up bagels (top them off with butter, cream cheese or locally produced preserves from Sierra Madre’s own E. Waldo Ward and Son). Light eaters will enjoy the fresh fruit or quiche on the menu, while those looking for something a little more substantial can pick from their selection of panini sandwiches and cold sandwiches. Just want something sweet, or want to put the finishing touch on your meal? Enjoy Steamers’ gourmet soft biscotti, or one of their ice cream novelties.
Steamers’ coffees come from a local micro-roaster in Pasadena, the advantage of which is that having a nearby roaster insures maximum freshness with no shipping or shelf time. It also provides the opportunity to roast and blend small batches to Steamers exacting specifications. I’m told the socially conscious roaster owns coffee plantations in Guatemala, and 50% of their beans are brought in to them from their own plantation. They have deeded one third of the land to workers, support fair trade, and the farmers are paid a fair wage for their product. Other coffee beans from other coffee producing countries are taste selected, always insuring quality beans and taste. And in continuing the socially conscious theme of the roaster, Steamers’ cold drink cups are produced from corn byproducts and are therefore a naturally compostable product.
But Steamers offers Sierra Madre more than just a coffee house. Their magazine stand fills a long neglected niche in town, offering a large variety of family friendly periodicals for sale, covering a wide range of interests. Steamers logo branded clothing and gifts are available, as well as seasonal boutique items, plus the preserves and jellies from E. Waldo Ward and Son.
Steamers also features (for sale) art of Sierra Madre, highlighting water color artist Carol Fuller, whose original water colors depict old Sierra Madre, including Kersting Court, circa 1915 and the Red Car, circa 1949. In addition to the full-size works of art, note cards depicting old-time Sierra Madre are available.
