Reservoir Project Reaches Milestone By Bill Coburn
The reservoir project behind Mira Monte Park (aka Turtle Park) continues and reached a major milestone Saturday, as nearly 100 mixers pulled into the park, dropped off their loads of 10 cu. yds. of concrete and made room for the next (see photo below). It was pouring day for the foundation, the base upon which the reservoir, which upon completion will have a capacity of 1.7 million gallons of water, will rest.
Approximately 182 tons of steel (that’s 364,000 pounds!) of steel was placed in the foundation. Two layers of number 7 rebar (that’s 7/8” dia. steel) were placed in the 114’ diameter x 2’-6” thick foundation, with the steel placed at 6” on center (from the center of one piece of rebar to the center of the next piece is 6”) in each direction, at the top and the bottom of the foundation (see photo below). Nine hundred ninety-eight yards of 4,000psi concrete (the strength of the specified concrete after 28 days of curing is 4,000 pounds per square inch) were poured under the watchful eyes of a special inspector. Special inspectors are required on all projects that require 4,000psi concrete strength. The concrete will be tested at 7, 14, 21 and 28 days to make sure it cures to the required strengths.
Material will begin arriving May 2nd for the construction of the steel tank, and in the interim, crews will be backfilling and placing retaining walls around the tank.
According to Bruce Inman, Director of Public Works for the City, the current phase of the project looks to be done by the end of June. At that time the plan is to fill the reservoir, put it on line, and then tear down the other reservoir, across the street on the northwest corner of Mira Monte and Mt. Wilson Trail. The third phase of the construction, some of which will take place concurrently with the replacement of the second reservoir, is the replacement of the existing pumping station, located adjacent the second reservoir.
The $8 million Mira Monte Reservoir project is funded with grant money from multiple agencies, including the Federal government, the San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District, in addition to City water revenue. The project has been in planning since the mid to late 1990s, and is intended to increase the seismic stability and improve the safety of the City’s water supply.
