SM Civic Club Donates Thousands to Local Organizations, Students by Phyllis Chapman
Sierra Madre Civic Club brought the curtain down on its 2006-2007 year to much applause and the great satisfaction of its members. Brimming with success, their efforts have netted more than $16,000 which they have donated to a list of beneficiaries voted by its members.
The following organizations have received generous gifts from the Club; Church of the Ascension for historic landmark refurbishment; City of Sierra Madre, AED Project - public access to Automated External Defibrillation - purchase 1 unit; Convalescent Aid Society - purchase of wheelchairs and walkers; Creative Arts Group - art program for two grade levels; Healthy Summer Fun in the Park - staff salaries and program fees; Sierra Madre Historical Archives - preservation of Howard Whalen papers, photographs and sculptures; Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society - classroom activity booklet/ Sierra Madre History; Sierra Madre Public Library - bench, trash receptacle, bike rack for front garden refurbishment; and Sierra Madre Rose Float Assoc. - purchase of MIG weIder. Also, historical archives at S.M. Library, Girl's Softball and Sierra Madre Little League.
At their May 9th club meeting they presented thirteen monetary awards to the following worthy high school seniors: Heather Alcorn, Jennifer Bickel, Lauren Conroy, Patrick Drolet, Chelsea Entzel, Heather Heefner, Kasey Johnson, Katie Koerber, Sossi Latchman, Maura Pock, William (Jay) Sullivan and Jeffrey Sullivan. Each recipient spoke briefly about future plans.
As their new year begins, Club plans are underway for members' participation in Sierra Madre’s July 4th Centennial Celebration in the park. New members are always welcome in this active, very fun-loving group. For more information call 626-355-3928. |
