(5/18/07) Sierra Madre All-America City Rally Set For May 30
The final Sierra Madre All-America City Rally prior to the three-day All-America City conference in Anaheim will be held at the Community Recreation Center (611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd.) at 6pm on Wednesday, May 30th. At the Rally, the delegates that will be participating in the Conference will rehearse for the public the live portion of the presentation, directed by Alison Kalmus of the Southern California Lyric Theater. The rehearsal will be a valuable opportunity for the delegates to get a feel for the presentation in front of a live audience, so they can make necessary adjustments, if any, to improve the presentation prior to the competition, which is to be held just a week later.
In addition to the live presentation for the judges, a video is being prepared to be shown Thursday evening at the Civic Action Fair.
Sierra Madre participated for the first time in the 2006 All-America City contest, and was named one of twenty-eight finalists out of more than 600 entries. “It was inspirational because all of the cities were bursting with pride in their own cities, and we had a story to tell just as they did. Smaller communities often face daunting challenges...All of the cities were trying to show a can do spirit, and the presentations of all of the cities were representations of that ‘yes we can’ spirit. It was not only a good chance to show off Sierra Madre, but a great opportunity to get some good ideas” said then Mayor John Buchanan. With such a successful first time experience, the City decided to give it another try this year, and its application was selected as one of the accepted participating entries for 2007.
The City’s application was required to highlight three activities on which the community has pulled together to solve a challenge that was facing it. The three chosen challenges/responses were the creation of the new Youth Activity Center, the Senior Housing Project, and Open Space concerns.
Since 1949, the Award has honored communities of all sizes (cities, towns, counties, neighborhoods and regions) where community members, government, businesses and nonprofit organizations work together to address critical local issues. More than 500 communities have earned this distinguished title and many have earned it more than once.
The National Civic League (NCL) is one of the leading proponents of citizen democracy in the United States. It was founded in 1894 by Theodore Roosevelt and other government reformers. NCL is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization dedicated to building community and promoting political reform at the local level. NCL accomplishes its mission through facilitating community processes and conducting and publishing research on political reform and community building. Through its All-America City Award program, NCL recognizes community engagement efforts across the nation, while encouraging other communities to follow the examples of All-America Cities and Finalists. For more information, visit www.ncl.org.
The 2007 Final Presentation and Awards will be held in Anaheim, California on June 6-8. |
