SMWC Celebrates 100 Years of Community and Philanthropy Saturday, March 10, 2007 By Bill Coburn
“As we celebrate our past, we are also looking forward to our next one hundred years, building the future of our club on our continuing service to our community, and the lasting friendships that we make. I hope you will enjoy your visit with us today, and take time to learn about our club, its members, and its activities.” With these words, Sierra Madre Woman’s Club president Dixie Coutant welcomed members and guests and opened the festivities at Essick House on Saturday.
After the Pledge of Allegiance and a brief reading by Coutant’s 92-year old grandmother, Edna Peyton, Second vice-president Mary Carney got up and read a brief history of the Woman’s Club, the contents of which can be found elsewhere in this issue. Dixie introduced the Club’s officers and its Board of Directors, and reminded those in attendance that the Club’s major source of income, the Wistaria Thrift Shop was open for those who were interested (Mayor John Buchanan walked away with an amusingly loud Hawaiian shirt). Commendations were presented to the Woman’s Club by representatives of Rep. David Dreier’s office (which also presented the Club with a U.S. flag that had been flown over the White House), and Supervisor Mike Antonovich. President Coutant accepted all on the club’s behalf. On hand representing the City were Mayor John Buchanan and Council Member Joe Mosca. Council members Enid Joffe, Don Watts and Kurt Zimmerman did not attend.
After these presentations, the entertainment began. 14-year old piano virtuoso Vincent Johnson entertained inside on the Woman’s Club’s 94-year old Chickering piano, exhibiting a dazzling talent for ragtime music that had toes tapping throughout the open house. Outside on the patio, refreshments of brownies and cookies were served with lemonade, and homemade ice cream was also available. Live entertainment of soft jazz was provided by local artist Jane Fuller.
At 3pm, a presentation on the history of the Red Cars in Sierra Madre was made by Red Car expert Bill Myers. The event was over shortly thereafter, and the guests, several of whom had attended in period attire, wound their way home from this memorable celebration of the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club.
