Sierra Madre Celebrates 100 Year Anniversary of Incorporation Feb. 23, 2007 By Bill Coburn
Alverno High School’s historic Villa del Sol d’Oro was the setting for the Centennial Anniversary Gala held last Friday evening, attended by an estimated 200 revelers, dozens of whom attended in turn of the (20th) century attire, some of whom were in character as early Sierra Madreans.
Gloria Dennison portrayed Fannie Hawks, promoting real estate ventures and discussing the land her family had donated to the Episcopal Church for its wood-frame chapel, to be replaced at a later date with the stone structure which stands to this day. Barry Schwam played the part of John J. Hart, mourning the loss of his vineyard and winery that once was located at what is now Memorial Park, site of the Hart Memorial Park House. Phyllis Chapman dressed up as Caroline Osgood, the first president of the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club, which will be celebrating its centennial on March 10. Lydia Bangston was on hand as Alice Brugman, who planted the Wistaria Vine which is celebrating its 114th year on March 25th of this year.
Rob and Wendy Stockly, who co-chaired the event, were joined in welcoming guests by Toni Buckner, co-chair of the Centennial. Mayor John Buchanan, also in period costume, portrayed C.W. Jones, the City’s first mayor. Also in attendance from City Government were Mayor Pro Tem Enid Joffe, in period costume and Council Member Joe Mosca. Conspicuous in their absence were Buckner’s co-chair, Judy Webb-Martin, and Council Members Don Watts and Kurt Zimmerman. Webb-Martin was traveling through Africa on a trip planned long before the Centennial. Watts, asked to explain his absence from the historic occasion, provided a good reason for not attending, but asked that it be kept private, and we will honor his request for privacy. Zimmerman’s response was that he was “vacationing in Northern California. My trip was planned well in advance of the Centennial Gala.”
But the party went on without them. Old time music, played on fiddle and guitar, was provided by The Happy Neighbor Club – Kurt MacInnis, and Alan and Margaret Davis, after an early performance by the Alverno High School Concert Choir. A video featuring Mayor Buchanan and many old pictures from the Sierra Madre archives was played continuously on a screen in the patio.
Roast beef and poached salmon were on the Gooden Delicious Caterers menu for dinner, as well as pasta and a chicken dish, followed by delicious cakes provided by Wildflour Baking Company.
The evenings events were recorded by Channel 3SMTV, with Colleen McKernan, in saloon girl costume, interviewing attendees for their thoughts on the centennial of the city. Look for the videos from the evening to played repeatedly on Channel 3 over the next few months.
After the official event wound down, many of the partiers chose to continue the celebration at Lucky Baldwin’s, and as the evening made its way into morning nearly two dozen of the guests were still enjoying each other’s company.
It was a pleasant evening, featuring good food, fine wine (until it ran out), enjoyable entertainment, and commemorative souvenirs for all. Congratulations to the Centennial Committee, and Rob and Wendy, for putting on a party that will be talked about for some time.
