Civic Club Ant-Free Picnic – Fun! - Successful Event By Phyllis Chapman (posted 4/19/07) What's a picnic without ants? Fortunately, the army of ants that led up to the entrance of Sierra Madre Civic Club's Centennial Picnic stopped there, allowing the capacity crowd of more than 300 that attended to have a great day. The picnic themed the club's annual fund raiser, their Luncheon and Chinese Auction held Saturday, April 14 at La Salle High School Auditorium. There was a bright scene to greet everyone at the picnic with fanciful kites flying overhead created by Decorations Chair Ann Bixel, colorful floral centerpieces on the tables with small street cars, that would have been your mode of transportation in 1907; designed by Gail Skiles and the hats and vintage clothing worn by so many people. Green Street Restaurant of Pasadena catered the delicious salad luncheon. There was an amazing variety of quality items for the Chinese Auction, the day's highlight. Auctioneer Anita Thompson, wearing a streetcar conductor's uniform, kept the auction on a fast track for the many lucky winners. Adding to the largess was a silent auction, a $100 money hat and chances on a beautiful quilt made by Judie Cimino. Club President Suzanne Decker warmly greeted all who attended, thanking, them for their support. She introduced her board and recognized all the members who came on board to make the affair such a success, with highest praise to Ways and Means Co-Chairs Vickie Vernon and Nancy Fox, for a super job. Fox has commented that the months of work was like planning a large wedding. This is Civic Club's main annual fund raiser to support club philanthropies. In May their donation takes place with funds raised prorated over a list of worthy local causes voted by the members. Click on a photo to enlarge it (Photos by Judie Cimino) |
