National Civic League Names Sierra Madre 2007 All-America City (AAC) Finalist (posted 4/19/07) The All-America City Award is America's original and most prestigious community recognition award. Since 1949, the Award has honored communities of all sizes (cities, towns, counties, neighborhoods and regions) where community members, government, businesses and nonprofit organizations work together to address critical local issues. More than 500 communities have earned this distinguished title and many have earned it more than once. The application process alone represented a valuable opportunity to evaluate the way our community manages opportunities and challenges. Sierra Madre’s 18-page application is available for public viewing on the City’s website at www.cityofsierramadre.com. Communities that earn the All-America City title realize numerous benefits, including:
"The AAC
competition brought our community together like never before. The Award has
highlighted the great accomplishments of our citizens. It is a seal of approval
for our City that says that our community is moving in the right direction and
has the civic infrastructure in place to solve any problem that we may face in
the future. It is an affirmation of the great work being done in our community
and tells others that our City is the place you want to be."
"The City
of DeSoto, Texas considered the All-America City Award application process to be
a tremendously rewarding opportunity . "Sixty-five residents, business leaders,
Council members, and staff served on five committees that created our
application. Through several meetings and numerous hours together, we built
partnerships and close friendships as we inventoried community projects,
programs, and philosophies." The 2007 Final Presentation and Awards will be held in Anaheim, California on June 6-8. Community delegates are now being recruited to join the delegation to travel to Anaheim; interested parties should contact Elisa Weaver for more information. A celebratory community rally will be held the last Wednesday of the month, April 25, at 6:00 pm at Sierra Madre Elementary School, 141 W. Highland Ave. All are invited to share in the excitement!
