Mt. Wilson Observer Sponsored Debate a Little One Sided, No on V Not Represented

Explanation for absence raises more questions than it answers, as former Mayor Glenn Lambdin says Observer editor Susan Henderson is lying   by Bill Coburn, photo by Bill Coburn

The debate on Measure V which was sponsored by the Mt. Wilson Observer and held Thursday, April 5th, did not turn out to be a debate, for the simple reason that only one side showed up.  As the debate began, one side of the stage sat empty, the other had three representatives (see above photo).  As moderator James MacPherson opened the evening, he noted that there was no one from the opposition there to debate.  He asked if there was anyone in the audience from the opposition that would like to sit on the panel, at which point members of the audience shouted that they didn't know who was on stage, so they weren't sure who the opposition was.  The three representatives on stage then introduced themselves as being there to represent the Yes on Measure V side.

Moderator MacPherson then acknowledged that there could be no debate with only one side in attendance, and tried to move on, but a member of the audience asked if the No on V people had said they would be there, or were they "just blowing us off" or what?  MWO editor Susan Henderson then stated that she had received confirmation that former mayor Glenn Lambdin would participate, and also said he would assist with getting other panelists.  Ms. Henderson added that "after all the notifications had gone out" she had met with Lambdin Monday night, April 2nd at the Chamber of Commerce forum, at which time they were going to "...solidify the remaining participants...".  She then stated that by the time the meeting was over Monday, Lambdin had "withdrawn his offer to participate."  You can view the video of Ms. Henderson's comments here

In e-mail communication between myself and Lambdin, Glenn informed me at 6:49am on Wednesday, March 28th, that he would not be participating in the debate. The 28th was the day after MWO's Stefan Bund announced at City Council that he was looking for panel members to represent No on Measure V in Thursday's debate, and five full days before Henderson says Lambdin withdrew.  You can view that e-mail by clicking here

Contacted after Thursday's events, Lambdin said: "Susan Henderson’s opening comments regarding what she referred to as my confirmed acceptance to participate is a bold-faced lie.  She called me Monday morning on the 26th.  She asked if I would participate in the debate.  I told her I would, under two conditions, number one, it was televised, and number 2, it was with an audience that understood the principals of civility.  Susan called me Monday, a week later, the morning of the Chamber forum, at my home asking me again. I declined, because my same conditions still stood, which she failed to accommodate.  She said ‘Glenn, I need your help.’  She asked if there was anybody that I knew that would do it, she asked me if Colleen McKernan would do it, and I told her that I would ask Colleen.  I mentioned it to Colleen  and Colleen declined.  There was never a confirmation on my participation.  I never agreed to assist her in putting a panel together, I told her I would extend her invitation to Colleen, that is the extent of anything.  This type of lying is endemic from the Mt. Wilson Observer.  It’s shameful."

While MacPherson was attempting to continue the evening by switching from a debate format to a Q. and A. format, I chose to leave, rather than cover an event that only offered one side of the issue.
