Snooky Gregor (she goes to EVERYTHING) celebrated her 90th birthday with a bash at the Sierra Madre Woman's Club, of which she is a long-time member, on Saturday, March 13th. Greger, (shown above left with certificate presented by the Chamber of Commerce to commemorate the occasion) who has lived in the same Sierra Madre home since her marriage in 1940, first moved to the U.S. from Canada in 1927. Snooky (pictured below with children, grandchildren and great grandchildren) and her parents and siblings lived for a while on what was a 5-acre lot at the corner of Orange Grove and Michillinda. Snooky was nicknamed "Baby Snookums" after a radio show of the era, and it was later shortened to Snooky. She is a long-time volunteer, working each year in the Chamber Information Booth at the Wistaria Festival and cutting oranges for the runners each year at the Mt. Wilson Trail Race. She and her late husband (of more than 50 years) Henry had three daughters and a son. Henry worked as a tennis pro/teacher and also repaired typewriters. Snooky taught pre-school at Anoakia for many years. I first met Snooky in February of 2003, when longtime Sierra Madre resident and photographer Joe Hinojos shared the stage with Boys Choir director and silent organ pianist Bob Mitchell at a Kiwanis Club luncheon. Hinojos told me he'd like to dance with his childhood friend Snooky to Mitchell's accompaniment, if I could track her down. From that point on, I seemed to see Snooky everywhere I went. I saw her a week later at the Woman's Club Celebrity Luncheon with Stephanie Edwards, and again at the May, 2003 Legendary Bingo Fundraiser for SMRFA, the 2003 Trail Race, the July 27, 2003 Concert in the Park, the Sept., 2003 fundraiser for the Veteran's Photo Wall, at the Oct., 2003 dedication of the Veteran's Photo Wall, the Oct. 2003 Grand Re-Opening of Arnold's Hardware, the April, 2004 Legendary Bingo Fundraiser, the 2004 celebration for John Grijalva as Older American of the year, the 2004 SMVFA Pancake Breakfast, the 2004 Mt. Wilson Trail Race, the July 3rd Concert in the Park in 2004, along the parade route 4th of July 2004, Pioneer Days in 2004, the 2005 Mt. Wilson Trail Race, at the Woman's Club Centennial celebration in March, 2007, the 2007 Mt. Wilson Trail Race, at Rotary's Elvis Concert in the Park in 2007, post Rose Parade in January of 2008, Mt. Wilson Trail Race of 2008, the Woman's Club open house before the 2008 4th of July parade, Elvis in the Park, 2008, and at the 2009 Mt. Wilson Trail Race. And these are just the times I saw her when I took her picture. I saw her many times when I didn't. It was interesting to discover in researching all these photos, that I have a picture from the year 2000 of Snooky cutting oranges at the Trail Race (bottom right of page), nearly three years before I met her. I also discovered I have about 20 pages on which I have to change Snookie to Snooky or Gregor to Greger, or both. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SNOOKY!! Snooky at 18 in Palm Springs |
