JPL Meteorologist Dr. Bill Patzert Speaks to Sierra Madre Kiwanis

Tuesday, June 1st

Dr. Bill Patzert, a climatologist and oceanographer at JPL who has been conducting research on the ocean’s role in climate changes and who serves as JPL’s media spokesperson for ocean and climate related activities was the featured speaker at Tuesday's Kiwanis Club meeting. During his career, he has served as a consultant to NASA, the U.S. Department of Commerce, the United Nations and many scientific and environmental groups. He has received many awards for scientific accomplishments, including 4 NASA Exceptional Service Medals and the Medal of the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (the highest award of the French Space Agency).

Dr. Patzert's presentation focused on California, El Nino, and the water/drought status of the Southwestern United States.  He spoke for about 40 minutes.  Unfortunately, I only had 25 minutes worth of chip on my camera.  I have uploaded the 25 minutes I recorded.  I also have an audio recording on my iPhone that I started a few minutes after the video shut down, I'm going to try to figure out how to get that uploaded as well.

The part that particularly disturbs me about running out of memory is that about one minute after the camera shut down (and two or three before I thought to turn on the iPhone audio note app) Dr. Patzert responded to a comment from the audience in regards to global warming.  The response, which I really wish I'd been able to get on video, was "whether you believe in it or not, it's a fact."
