"Bill" White, long-time Sierra Madre physician and volunteer with its "Order of Merit" Award. Here is Dr. White's bio from the program. From his medical practice here in our community to the sharing of his time and talents with many, William E. White, M.D. has demonstrated a passion for excellence and dedication.
As an acknowledgment of that dedication, the Alpha Auxiliary of the Methodist Hospital Foundation has selected Dr. White as the Centennial Honoree to receive the "2003 Order of Merit".
Each year an outstanding physician is chosen to be honored for their dedicated service to their patients, their community and their personification of an exemplary citizen.
Born in St. Helena, California, the White family moved to Takoma Park, Maryland, where he attended High School and College. He then returned to California to graduate from Loma Linda University and his internship at the White Memorial Hospital. His Great Grandmother; Ellen G.White, was the startup founder of Loma Linda University Medical School and the White Memorial Hospital is named after her.
Dr. White has been a long time member of the Methodist Hospital staff and has been in Family Practice in this area for 40 years. He has served as Chief of Medical Staff in 1984 and Director of the Quality Care Committee for the Methodist Hospital 1982- 83.
As a physician for the "British Home" in Sierra Madre, he had the opportunity to meet Princess Margaret in 1965 and her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1983. He has worked closely with the Center for the Handicapped Blind in Sierra Madre and has assisted with on-site rescue medical care with the Search and Rescue Team. He is the only Honorary Member of that team. In 1998, he was selected as Sierra Madre's Honorary Citizen of the Year and their July 4th Parade Grand Marshall in 2000.
Aside from his other hobbies of offshore sailboat racing, snow skiing and mountain hiking, he enjoys giving talks on the history of this Southern California area.
Dr. White has been a resident of Arcadia since 1972. His wife, Patricia, is a registered nurse currently working at the City of Hope National Medical Center. They have two sons, Jeff and Gregg, and one grandson. Past Recipients of the Order of Merit
