Quest for Burn Survivors, 2003 Thursday, June 5, 2003 Story and photos by Leonard Zlotorowicz
Firefighter's Quest for Burn Survivors 2003 Touches Down in Sierra Madre, Arcadia, Monrovia On Thursday June 5, 2003 at 9:00 A.M., Sierra Madre was visited by the Firefighters Quest For Burn Survivors 2003 Rally. An all volunteer organization, the Quest collects donations for the benefit of burn survivors, where the need arises. Traveling with red lights and sirens, the volunteer staff is escorted by participating fire and law enforcement vehicles that help form a continuous relay. This year the Quest rally was escorted by 21 California Highway Patrol Motor Officers as well as an entourage of Fire Engines, Firefighters and Police Offivers who give their valuable time to this important annual event. (SMPD and it’s sole Motor Officer, Dan Ginter participated). This year the caravan style rally, traveled more than 1500 miles and visited more than 85 Fire Departments, Police Departments and Civic orginizations in Los Angeles, Orange, San Bernardino, Riverside, Ventura and Santa Barbara Counites. The Sierra Madre stop lasted only 25 minutes, but it was exciting to see this event first hand. This year, the Quest Rally 2003 collected $ 100,001.19 to benefit survivors of burns. Although I am retired from the Sierra Madre Volunteer Fire Department, I am proud that I represent SMVFD every year in this annual event. I am also proud that I have been a part of this event since it's start in 1996, after 6 firefighters from Glendale Fire Department and Los Angeles City Fire Department were burned in the brush fires of Malibu on October 22, 1996. For additional information about the Quest go the the Quest website: http://www.firefightersquest.org/.
