Pioneer Kids Events Set For October 11 And 12 The Sierra Madre Pioneer Days Association has rounded up many fun events for children and families this year. Gold panning, apple bobbing, butter churning, clothes washing, cabin building (with Lincoln logs), and pumpkin carving are just some of the activities planned to take place from noon to 3 pm at Memorial Park on Saturday October 11th. Three-legged races, hoop races, wheel barrow races will occur at 12:30, 1:00 and 1:30 pm respectively. The watermelon seed spitting contest is set for 2:30 pm at the bandshell. Kiwanis Club of Sierra Madre will help the Association to facilitate Pioneer Kids activities. Be sure to stay for the Pioneer Pageant at the Memorial Park bandshell where children will reenact scenes from Sierra Madre’s history. The Pageant will begin at 3:30 pm following the announcement of the winners of the Heritage Essay Contest (4th, 5th, and 6th grades) at 3:00 pm. The essay contest is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Sierra Madre. Memorial Park is located at 222 West Sierra Madre Boulevard. On Sunday October 12th bring the family to Ward’s Ranch and learn about Sierra Madre’s oldest continuous business, E. Waldo Ward & Son. Creative Arts Group will have a hat making activity for children at Ward’s from 10 am to Noon. Take a tour of the factory with Jeff Ward, watch crafters demonstrate their artistry, and visit the barn museum to learn about E. Waldo Ward and his Seville orange marmalade and other fine products. Antique cars and engines will also be on display. Ward’s Ranch is located at 273 East Highland Avenue. Pioneer Kids Events are co-sponsored by Arnold’s Frontier Hardware, Creative Arts Group, E. Waldo Ward & Son, Friends of the Sierra Madre Library, Kiwanis Club of Sierra Madre, Rotary Club of Sierra Madre, Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce, Sierra Madre Civic Club, Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society, and the Community Services Department of the City of Sierra Madre. The Association is grateful for the support of community organizations, businesses, and the City of Sierra Madre in making Pioneer Days 2003 possible.
