Luminaria Ceremony An Emotional Relay For Life Highlight - Download Luminaria Forms
By Phyllis Chapman
A very meaningful hour during Sierra Madre's Relay for Life each year is the Luminaria Ceremony which takes place Saturday night of the event from 9 to 10 p.m.. This year's Relay, the 7th annual, kicks off at 9:00 a.m., Saturday, September 16, in Memorial Park, 222 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. Relays are the American Cancer Society's largest fund raisers in the fight against cancer, for research, prevention and service to families.
The Luminaria Ceremony takes its name from the small white bags, each with sand and a candle inside, that are placed around the perimeter of the park. Bags are dedicated to honor (a) cancer survivor(s) or someone who has passed away from cancer. The person's name and a message, if you wish, is placed on each bag. Last year more than 1,000 gleaming bags rimmed the park. As darkness approaches the candles are lit, park lights are extinguished and the ceremony begins. Linda Knowles, Luminaria Mistress of Ceremony, has planned a special program this year featuring music, comments from people in our town and a Power Point Presentation projected onto a large screen, honoring and recognizing with photographs and names those living affected by cancer and those we have lost.
Who has not been touched by cancer, yourself perhaps, or family members or friends? For an emotional high do plan to be a participant in this beautiful program and to attend.
Luminaria bags are $10 each. Applications are available in this paper, at Arnold's Frontier Hardware, 297 W. Sierra Madre Blvd., Leonora Moss, 9 Kersting Ct., Savor the Flavor, 11 Kersting Ct., Lunch Salon, 65 N. Baldwin and Webb-Martin Realtors, 30 N. Baldwin. They can also be downloaded off the internet by going to sierramadrenews.net/acsrelay, and clicking on the link. For more Luminaria Ceremony information and to find out how to participate in the PowerPoint Presentation please call Diane Hatfield at (626) 357-2273. The time is now for you to be on the front line as we work to zap cancer.

"I WALKED" I walked around a track today... I walked to help a disease go away. I walked because there is a need. I walked that bodies could be freed. I walked to give a small child hope. I walked to help someone cope. I walked for a husband or a wife. I walked to give someone life. I walked with my head held high... I walked for that one about to die. I walked excitedly, not demure. I walked to help find a cure I walked for everyone to see. I walked for you, I walked for me. |
