The folks on Alegria Ave. dress up their street every year for Halloween, and it has become a favorite destination for thousands. TV News crews come out, students do documentary films about it, it's a really big deal. This year, there were some new neighbors that got into the act, and some of those who have been participating added features to their displays. This has been going on for years, and most people give the credit to "The Pumpkin Man," Bud Switzer. Bud tells me that his driveway was so long, winding and dark, that he didn't get trick or treaters, so he lined his driveway with jack o'lanterns. Be careful what you wish for, Bud. Now there are so many people on the street that the PD closes it down, and most of the residents have their yards "off-limits," with candy distribution taking place at the sidewalk. Anyway, Bud's jack o'lantern display grew till it included hundreds of pumpkins, and his son, Kevin, and he sometimes used forklifts to haul them. Kevin has now moved away, and Bud has backed off somewhat as he cares for his wife, and the "Pumpkin Man" torch has been passed to Doug Parker, two doors down. As Bud says it, "Doug's taken pumpkin carving to a whole new level." There's no doubt about that.
