Current Biz Briefs
For more than 2 years,
I wrote a column in one of the three local papers (each of the papers carried
the column at one time or another). The intent of the column was to let
everybody know briefly what Sierra Madre businesses and non-profit/civic
organizations were up to. This is an archive of columns. In April
2002, we noticed that we were getting a lot of traffic to this page, which
no-one knew was an archive till they got there. So I thought, let's
give the people looking for Biz Briefs, Biz Briefs. So it is back again,
as of May 2002. You can click on the link above to see the current
column.

and Sunday. Their inventory of new women’s clothing is even greater than before
with the addition of some great looking holiday outfits, so stop by and check
out their selection. ….. A good time to do that would be during this weekend’s
Sierra Madre Chamber of Commerce Holiday Open House . The festivities
and carolers begin tomorrow evening at 5:15 p.m., with the tree lighting
at about 6 p.m. and Santa’s arrival shortly after. The Sierra Madre
Rose Court will be there, and stores will be open!!! The following day,
Santa will be in Kersting Court again from 10 till 2, and the Creative
Arts Group will be sponsoring a free Holiday Arts Project. At
4 p.m., the Chamber of Commerce will present to four lucky winners
a $25 gift certificate redeemable in Sierra Madre shops. Santa will return
on Dec. 9th from 10 till 2 at Savor the Flavor, and on Dec. 16th,
same time, at Once Upon A Time……You may have heard that the Cajun
Way Café (24 W. Sierra Madre Blvd.) will be moving to Monrovia
at the beginning of the year. They’ve been a good neighbor and we’re sorry
to see them go. I have always enjoyed their food and the service was always
friendly and helpful. I wish them well in their new location……But shortly
after they leave, look for the opening of Jim Spencer’s Mountain View Restaurant
at that location. Word is that it will be opening in January……. The
Sierra Madre Civic Club has announced the beginning of its annual
Educational Awards for 2001. High school seniors who live in Sierra Madre

be in Kersting Court again from 10 till 2, and the Creative Arts Group
will be sponsoring a free Holiday Arts Project. At 4 p.m., the

certificate redeemable in Sierra Madre shops. Santa will return on Dec.
9th from 10 till 2 at Savor the Flavor, and on Dec. 16th, same time, at Once
Upon A Time…….If you haven’t strolled around Sierra Madre’s downtown section
lately, make a point of doing so soon. Most of the stores have completed
redecorating their storefronts for the holidays, the Chamber is providing
lights to brighten up the storefront windows, and the weather is crisp (as
I write this it’s perfect holiday shopping weather). Sierra Madre offers
a return to the way holiday shopping used to be, where people are friendly,
and the atmosphere is warm. There is a traditional small-town charm, epitomized
by the old buildings and the caring merchants who take the time to dress
up the old buildings in the holiday spirit. There are dozens of shops offering
a wide selection of merchandise, with all shops in walking distance of each
other, and personalized service. And when it’s time for a bite to eat, there
are several fine eateries to choose from. If you are new to Sierra Madre,
you can still find your way around with the new easy-to-use downtown business
map available at the Chamber of Commerce and at many of the stores. So
plan on making Sierra Madre one of your destinations as you do your holiday
shopping.

on Veteran’s Day, Saturday the 11th. Stop by and show your support to those
who’ve done so much for us……Lailey and Co. wants to remind you to
get your holiday orders in early. Due to the popularity of its original works
and custom designs, Lailey and Co. always finds itself rushing to fulfill
last minute holiday orders. Sometimes a design adjustment or two after you’ve
seen the finished work can make all the difference, which can more readily
be done when an item is ordered early, but may be impossible to do in the
last minute rush. So get your orders in early…..

The Sierra Madre Rose Float Association has cancelled Saturday night’s
Country Dinner/Barn Dance due to a lack of advance ticket sales. This
is disappointing because of the success of last year’s event, which drew
nearly 150 people, all of whom truly seemed to have a good time. However,
since they had to guarantee large amounts of money to the Chefs and the Bands,
they couldn’t justify the expense based on advance sales. If you had planned
to attend the event but just hadn’t gotten around to getting a ticket, be
sure to let the Rose Float Assn. know. If there is enough interest shown,
it may encourage them to try again next year… And be sure to get your advance
tickets for the Kiwanis Club sponsored Lizzie’s Trail Inn Chicken
Dinner, available at Arnold’s Hardware and Best Buy; the
Rotary Club Tri-Tip Dinner/Swing Dance, tickets available at Savor

Dr. Theresa L. Smith, Chiropractor, is located at 80 Montecito Court.
She received her degree from Cleveland Chiropractic College in Los Angeles,
and was licensed by the California Chiropractic Board in 1998. She has practiced
in Sierra Madre ever since.
She is a subluxation based chiropractor, using diversified osseos and
non-osseoes
techniques, but she emphasizes the non-osseos technique. What that means
to you and me is that she is trained and capable of adjusting and maintaining
your body and it’s bone structure in both gentle and more forceful techniques,
but she emphasizes the gentle, non-forceful technique. Her emphasis on gentle,
non-forceful adjustment and maintenance allows her a diversified clientele
ranging in age from children to geriatric. The gentle techniques are especially
helpful with the geriatric set, as they are safe even for people with arthritis.
In addition, Dr. Smith offers nutrition counseling. “Many people today
start taking vitamin and nutritional supplements from GNC and other stores
without first analyzing and determining their system’s needs. I can determine
what their actual needs are, and from that help them to determine what nutritional
supplements they need. I also offer a great organic nutritional supplement
that is an actual food, as opposed to non-food supplements.”
Dr. Smith’s hours vary, so call to schedule your appointment for Monday
thru Wednesday, Friday or Saturday. Or E-mail her with questions at

one of Grandma Jelly’s exotic toys from around the world, (all of which encourage

Sierra Madre Biz Bios:
The last couple paragraphs of last week’s Biz Bios did not make it into
print. It is now being re-printed in its entirety.
I recently had the chance to interview Jody Lonergan of the Chantry
Flats Mule Station regarding articles in the L.A. Times and the Pasadena
Star News that she said stated that the station was being sold because financially
they couldn’t continue. Recent road closures caused by last years fires,
storms and mudslides were stated as the cause of the financial hardship.
She asked me to let you know that that is not the case at all. “The hardest
part has been the isolation due to the lack of telephone service for the last
few months. Dennis has to rely on a cell phone, and must go halfway down
the hill just to check for messages. And since many of his days are dawn
to dusk, he just doesn’t always have an opportunity to do that. When the
other reporters attempted to interview him, the articles had been published
before he could contact the writers.” (Author’s note: I haven’t seen the Times
article, but the Star News article correctly states that the Lonergans weren’t
interviewed, and quotes others. I had their e-mail address, and through
it was able to establish a time to make telephone contact).
Jody continued, “But financially, there hasn’t been that much of an impact.
Yes, the store that serves hikers is closed, but that’s only about 10% of
the total revenue. And with the reduction in inventory, that’s been minimized.
And due to contracts with the camp that’s run by the United Methodist Church,
we have a full summer schedule ahead of us. We’ve experienced road closures
before and survived just fine. The real losers in this are the hikers. This
stretch of mountain is beautiful, and one of the few places that solo woman
hikers can hike feeling safe. But spring is already gone, and that’s one
of the most beautiful times to hike these trails.”
So why put the pack station up for sale now? “Our goals have changed.
I recently took a job with the D.A.’s office in San Bernardino. Dennis has
been doing this since he was 12, that’s 33 years. Dennis would like to work
for the railroads. We both were ready for a change. And with the road closure,
it’s an ideal time to bring someone in who might not have the experience and
allow them to learn the operation without the store operation, so they’ll
be ready to go when the roads open again. We have 3 horses, 2 mules and 5
donkeys. We have contracts to serve the residents and the camp. It’s a,
what do they call it, a turn-key operation. I hope to have an opportunity
to talk to the writers of the other articles and set the record straight.
Oh, and by the way, one other thing I want to straighten out. The price
is $160,000.00, not the $150,000 figured that was used. But we both have
wonderful memories, and no regrets. Please let people know that.” Hopefully,
Jody, I just did. If you are interested in purchasing the station, you

When Millie Mittleman retired as an RN, she began to look for something
to occupy her time. An opportunity arose in a retail store featuring dancewear
in Covina called “Red Shoes.” Being quite familiar with the merchandise (Millie’s
son and daughter danced for years, with her son ultimately receiving a scholarship
to Adelphia University), she bought the store, and soon became well known
for her creative touch, good service, quality merchandise and fair prices.
In 1995, Millie opened a second location in Sierra Madre, called Millie’s
Dancewear 2. In 1998, she sold Red Shoes to concentrate on the Sierra Madre
location. Millie’s carries a large selection of dancewear, accessories and
supplies, casual to dressy, plus specialty shoes for many styles of dance.
Tap, ballet, jazz, and ballroom dance shoes, even dancing sneakers for tap
and jazz. Millie has seen many changes in her years in the business, and
notes that today there are more boys involved in dance, and fewer ballet customers.
And she notes with pride that today, many of her old Covina clients come
to her here to Sierra Madre, only now they are buying for their kids.
Millie’s Dancewear 2 will be discounting tights throughout the month of
May, sizes tots to 3X, so stop by and see Millie at Renaissance Plaza at 38
West Sierra Madre Blvd. or reach them by phone at (626) 355-5599.

The coveted Sierra Madre Blvd. mailing address has just received a whole
new batch of available numbers. With the opening of The Business Center
next door to Happy Jack’s Video came the addition of dozens of new
post office boxes with the Sierra Madre Blvd. address. All with 24-hour access
and a.m. mail delivery. Reserve yours now, before they sell out.
Happy Jack’s Owner Jim Moran saw an opportunity when the storefront
next door to his was vacated. Since Abacus closed last May, there has been
no one location where you could print out a spreadsheet, make a copy, send
a fax, and do your packaging and shipping. And so he decided to open The
Business Center. There is a brand new computer available for your rent, loaded
with the latest software, including the Microsoft Office 2000Suite, a zip
drive for easy transfer of large files, a laser printer for sharp black and
white documents and a color inkjet for the times when black and white just
won’t do it. And the picturesque view of the San Gabriel mountains as you
work at the computer can’t be beat.
The Business Center has a brand new high volume copier, and a brand new
fax machine that you can use to send or receive a fax. And The Business
Center can ship your package by FEDEX or UPS, and with the latest tracking
software can even arrange for you to be notified by e-mail when your package
has been received. The Business Center is located at 280 W. Sierra Madre
Blvd., or can be reached by phone at 836-6675.

If you grew up prior to the 1980s, you probably have memories of Home Economics
classes where students used patterns to create clothing. To today’s generation
“Home Ec” is as unknown as “E” tickets or “dialing” a phone. Children are
no longer required to learn to sew in school. Fortunately for San Gabriel
Valley residents who prefer quality hand made garments to mass produced clothing
from corporate clothing stores, there are people like Laurel Wood keeping
the art of being a seamstress alive.
Laurel’s Apparel Service not only does expert alterations, repairs
and other tailoring, but her specialty is the creation of new clothing.
This is not just a job for her, but an art. Her bridal gowns are in constant
demand, and she is known for her exquisite formalwear.
Laurel made her first dress when she was 9, excelled in Home Economics in
high school and then attended the School of Fashion Design in Boston. She
worked at the Ritz Carlton in Boston doing the final couture work on gowns
and then managed Gazelle, a high fashion store, for five years. She moved
to California where she worked in the movie and television industry, before
deciding that it wasn’t for her. For a short time, she worked from home,
before opening Laurel’s Apparel Service in 1991. Her store is located at
71 N. Baldwin, and she can be reached by phone at (626) 355-3280. Stop by

When Buccaneer bartender Mike Harker was having back discomfort,
he was skeptical of the magnetic pad his mother gave him to ease it. When
it persisted, he asked his chiropractor about its use, expecting an equally
skeptical reaction. What he received instead was an unqualified endorsement
of Nikken International, the maker of the pad. She offered to sign up under
him. Mike had not yet heard about Nikken’s unique multi-level sales plan,
but here was his chiropractor offering to sign up under him. So he tried
using the magnetic pad (he swears by the results), and decided to check into
the company behind the products.
He liked what he saw, so he and fiancée Lynn Ramsey signed
up as Independent Nikken Distributors. Nikken sells products utilizing
magnetic and infrared technology to help folks relieve stress that leads to
discomfort. They also sell skin care products and pet products. And they
have a complete sleep system to help you sleep comfortably.
In Japan, one in eight homes contains a Nikken product. Entering the U.S.
market in 1989, Nikken recently moved their international headquarters to
Irvine with hopes of matching that number, reducing it from the current 1
in 1000 U.S. households.
Nikken espouses a philosophy for healthy living to be used in conjunction
with its products. If you’d like to find out about Nikken products or distributorships,

dresses, and shawls.
Santos told me that she has maintained the same suppliers and will continue
to feature the same great product lines that Willow Creek’s clientele has

Once Upon A Time is a throw back to a once upon a time era, when small
town department stores weren’t “corporate anchors” for the local mall, but
service oriented purveyors of fine quality wares. Specializing in affordable,
quality children’s products, Once Upon A Time features everything from clothing
to shoes, stuffed animals, books, toys, umbrellas and more. And if you’re
running late for that baby shower, personalized gift-wrapping is available
as well.
Once Upon A Time is also an authorized Thomas the Train reseller. This
popular children’s toy manufacturer is very selective in choosing its resellers.
At Once Upon A Time, owners Bob and Cassa Bernardini are very familiar with
the Thomas products and so can help you select the proper one for your child’s
current stage of development, and/or advise you as to the future stages to
be preparing for.
After years in Santa Anita Fashion Park (it will always be SAFP to me),
Bob and Cassa decided to get away from the “chain store” direction that the
malls all seem to be heading towards. They investigated several San Gabriel
Valley cities and chose the small town ambience of Sierra Madre. So remember,
if you need something for children, you don’t need to look any farther than

When Julie Campbell retired from her career as librarian at First
Avenue Middle School, she was given the card catalogue that she had used for
years, with a plaque thanking her for her years of service. After years spent
encouraging children to think and imagine through the world of books, she
knew that a retirement of sitting at home wasn’t going to work for her. And
so she set out on her first ever retail endeavor, Grandma Jelly’s Toys.
But it wasn’t much of a stretch, as Grandma Jelly’s Toys features toys
that encourage children to use their imagination and experience adventures,
just as she did with books in her previous career. Same message, different
medium.
Attending gift and specialty shows, scouring trade magazines and catalogues,
Grandma Jelly’s locates and offers a selection of unique and original toys
from around the world. And more importantly, the toys encourage children
to think on their own. There are no toys in Grandma Jelly’s that have a
plug or use batteries. And children are encouraged to try out the toys in
the store prior to purchase. “Stuff that is not to be touched, I put up out

Tim Anderson of Tim Anderson Roofing has his home/office in
LaVerne, but TAR is definitely a Sierra Madre business. Tim proudly states
that TAR has put roofs on more than 150 homes/businesses in Sierra Madre.
Evidence of Tim’s longevity and quality of work is that he now gets calls
to re-roof houses from the people he “roofed” twenty-plus years ago.
Tim is a Sierra Madre native (and proud member of the Sierra Madre Surf
Club) who entered the roofing industry more than 25 years ago, gaining experience
in all aspects of roofing before starting his own business. Over the years,
Tim has built a network of reliable Sierra Madre sub-contractors that he works
with. Seventy-five percent of Tim’s jobs are in Sierra Madre, and his employees
are Sierra Madre residents.
One of the more impressive features about Tim’s business is that he guarantees
that your roof will not leak. And while Tim exercises the utmost in care
to ensure no leaks, until it rains, there can be no certainty. So Tim provides
his clients with 24-hour on-call protection, and will come to your house even
in the middle of the night to take the necessary steps to prevent damage to
your home if your TAR installed roof leaks.

Woody’s Waterworld is operated by longtime Sierra Madre resident
Woody Woodruff. Woody first moved to Sierra Madre as a child in the
late 1960s, and today, married with a child of his own, has run a successful
landscaping/hardscaping business here for more than 15 years.
Woody entered the industry doing gardening work, and has grown to become
a fully licensed landscape contractor (State Lic. #754885) specializing in
water misting systems, tropical planting and decorative waterfalls. Through
alliances with such manufacturers as Techstone and Eurostone Deck systems,
Woody can transform your backyard into a work of natural looking art. The
Techstone system uses a composite of polyfoam and concrete mix, with which
he can sculpt natural looking rock where real rock would be impossible to
place. The Eurostone Deck system is a synthetic concrete coating system that
is great for driveways, masonry surfaces, patios and pool decks. Unsightly
concrete can be transformed into a stunning simulation of stone, slate, tile
or Texturestone. Color and pattern are only limited by your imagination.
Woody has placed numerous pictures of his work and of both the above systems
at his website, www.woodyswaterworld.com. Or you can reach him by phone
at (626) 355-8957.

Sierra Madre’s oldest existing business is also Sierra Madre’s oldest existing
home-based business. Jeff Ward, great-grandson of Edwin Waldo Ward
(so that’s what the E. stands for) still lives in the Highland Avenue home
on the property where their manufacturing facility sits. This home-based
business revolves around food. Jams, jellies, marmalades and other specialty
foods are made on the premises every day.
E. Waldo Ward & Son, was started by Jeff’s great-grandfather in
1918 after he perfected his recipe for Seville (bitter-sweet) Orange Marmalade.
He turned his home into a marmalade machine where he pumped out as much as
he could to satisfy the discriminating demand. As the business grew, so did
the need for space. He then built a factory behind his home on Highland Avenue.
E. Waldo Ward is not just a business; it also signifies a time honored tradition
handed down from one generation to the next. From its founder to today's
great-grandchild, the legacy lives on.
All the products are made with the best ingredients. Made in small batches
using original recipes, Ward’s products include all time favorites and varieties
to satisfy the adventurous types. Some of the favorites are strawberry preserves,
boysenberry jelly, sweet pickled watermelon rind, and seville marmalades.
Wistaria jelly, made from the
wistaria petals, is only one example of their unique products which include
cranberry-orange marmalade, guava jam, and kiwi preserves.
And E. Waldo Ward and Son has survived because of its ability to adapt to
changing market conditions. Their website offers the opportunity to shop
online and choose from more than one hundred items. To experience the 100
years of tradition and quality, visit E. Waldo Ward and Son at 273 E. Highland
or go to www.waldoward.com. And be sure to stop by each year during Pioneer
Days, when E. Waldo Ward’s opens it’s museum and gift shops, giving demonstrations
in old time skills such as woodworking, printing, lace-making and more.
