Sierra Madre Rotary Club Seeks Young Musicians $1000 FIRST PLACE $500 SECOND PLACE $150 RUNNER-UP The Rotary Club of Sierra Madre is seeking musically talented high school seniors to participate in the Dan Stover Music Contest. Applicants must be instrumentalists and although they do not have to pursue a college music major, they do need to have plans to take at least one music class (other than music appreciation and/or ensemble) in each semester of their freshman year of college. The Dan Stover Music Award was begun by Christine Montan of the Rotary Club of Alhambra to honor Rotarian Dan Stover who passed away in 1987. Dan was a secondary education professional and an accomplished musician. The program has grown into a District wide event. The local auditions will take place at Alverno High School on Thursday, November 21, 2002 at 7:30PM. High school seniors can obtain applications from their music teacher or they can contact Sierra Madre Rotarian and Contest Chairperson, Camille Levee at (626) 357-9233. Received 9/12/02 Rotary Ambulance To The Rescue Proving itself an international force for goodwill, the Sierra Madre Rotary club recently purchased a retired ambulance for use by emergency personnel in Guamachil, Mexico. The ambulance, purchased at auction, and once owned by the City of Sierra Madre, was intended to be an addition to Guamachil’s single emergency vehicle. As circumstances would have it, however, their vehicle recently broke down. Both the Rotary Club of Sierra Madre and the Rotary Club of Guamachil worked closely in purchasing the vehicle with the Guamachil club providing additional funding toward the Sierra Madre club’s commitment. The relationship between both Rotary clubs stems from a similar purchase last year of a fire engine that was also donated to Guamachil. Sierra Madre’s renowned group of volunteer firefighters trained Guamachil’s emergency response team on use of the vehicle. Says Sierra Madre Rotary Club’s International Director, Mike Avila, “We are once again pleased to have the opportunity to work with our friends in Guamachil. This project, months in the making, is simply what Rotary is all about.” Susan Nunnery, Rotarian and Program Director of the Methodist Hospital Wound Care Center, was actively involved in soliciting donations of medical supplies from the hospital that will be included with the ambulance donation. She says, “Countless times, Methodist Hospital and its employees have been supporters of Rotary’s programs, from providing used wheelchairs and toys for orphanages to being active in various projects closer to home. I am overjoyed to part of both organizations.” The Sierra Madre Rotary Club’s ambulance purchase is part of a larger international endeavor, described by fellow Rotarians as Sowing the Seeds of Love, and includes yearly trips to Mexico to assist in building orphanages as well as a capital campaign to eradicate polio by 2005. Funds for this campaign are being matched 5 to 1 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as well as the World Bank.
