The Auditorium
Restoration Committee has raised $60,000 towards the
rehabilitation
the Sierra Madre School Auditorium over the past year. The
volunteer
group of concerned parents, past students, and community members
hopes to
raise an additional $20,000 to refurbish all the auditorium seats
during the
Measure Y bond construction at the school from summer 2002
through summer
2003.
Each seat
will bear a plaque inscribed with the name you wish. A donation
of $250 will
refurbish a seat in the second two rows. A donation of $125
will refurbish
one general or balcony seat. The first row has already sold
out at $500

Donating
a seat in the auditorium will establish you as part of the history
as well as
part of the future of the Sierra Madre Elementary School, a
kindergarten
through sixth grade school in the Pasadena Unified School
District.
The Mission Revival building opened in 1930 is part of the
historical
and cultural heritage of Sierra Madre. The auditorium - noted
for its vaulted,
louvered lamella ceiling, carved beams, hanging
chandeliers,
and professional stage complete with trap door -- featured a
grand piano,
a motion picture booth, and a seating capacity of 605 people.
Today the
school auditorium, while in need of improvements, is the forum of
the school's
thriving arts program, an integral part of the children's daily
curriculum.
Everyone
who contributes to this effort prior to May 27, 2002 will receive
an invitation
to a special Recognition Event to be held on the evening of
Saturday,
June 1, 2002 at a private home in Sierra Madre.

PUSD APPLICATION PERIOD BEGINS FOR NORMA COOMBS,
DON BENITO
AND MARSHALL SCHOOLS AND FOR
INTRA-DISTRICT
CHOICE OPTION

March
1 marked the first day parents could return their completed applications
for admission to the Pasadena Unified School District's three voluntary
or choice schools, Don Benito, Marshall and Norma Coombs.
Applications
can be obtained in Spanish, Armenian and English from the main offices of
the district's 31 schools or from the Office of Student Support Services,
which is located in Room 153 of PUSD's administrative headquarters (351 S.
Hudson, Pasadena.)
Applicants
can submit the forms through May 1, the cut-off point for returning a completed
application for admission to the 2002-2003 school year. All applications
must be returned to the Office of Student Support Services, which is open
Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
"Regardless
of whether a parent turns in their form on March 1 or May 1, he or she will
still have the same opportunity for admission," said Sterling Williams, director
of the Office of Student Support Services. "We do not consider applications
on a first-come, first-serve basis."
At those
schools where the number of applicants exceeds the number of available seats,
the district will conduct a random computer-generated lottery process.
Don Benito, Norma Coombs and Marshall typically receive more applicants than
the schools can accommodate, triggering the lottery process. Parents
will be notified of the results of the lottery process in early May, and
parents with a child already attending a school of choice receive an admissions
preference if they are submitting an application on behalf of a sibling whose
enrollment will overlap with the older sibling at that school.
As a result of a policy change adopted at the Feb. 26, 2002 Board meeting,
households that live within a specified area around Norma Coombs, Don Benito
and Marshall will have access to 20 percent of those schools' available seats
and can submit their applications between March 1 and May 1. Maps indicating
the specified areas around the three schools will be posted on the PUSD web
site (www.pasadena.k12.ca.us) and in the schools' main offices on March 12.
A letter will be sent home to all households within the specified areas announcing
the new policy in mid-March.
Intra-District
Choice Option
Parents wishing to send their children to a school other than the one they
are assigned to can apply--from March 1 through May 17--for the intra-district
choice option, also known as open enrollment. More specifically, if
a school can accommodate all students within its defined attendance boundary
and still has excess classroom seats, PUSD must make those seats available
to students from throughout the district. In some cases, more applicants
may apply to a particular school than there are available seats at that school,
requiring the district to conduct a random computer-generated lottery to determine
admission.
Applicants
will now be notified in early June if they have been accepted to a school
through the intra-district choice or open enrollment option. In the
past, they were not notified until mid-September.
"We still
have more ground to cover but I believe an earlier notification period demonstrates
our commitment to making the process more user-friendly for our customers,"
said Dr. Percy Clark, Jr., PUSD Superintendent.
Those
wishing to apply for the intra-district choice option in Spanish, English
or Armenian can do so by either obtaining an application at a PUSD school's
main office or
by visiting
the district's Office of Student Support Services (Room 153, 351 S. Hudson,
Pasadena) Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Parents
with a child already attending a school through an intra-district choice
option receive an admissions preference if they are submitting an application
on behalf of a sibling whose enrollment will overlap with the older sibling
at that school. Admissions preferences are also given to students who
receive before-school or after-school child care at a facility with available
seats.
As a result of the attendance boundary changes approved by the Board of Education
at their February 26, 2002 meeting, students whose school of assignment has
changed will receive an admissions preference in the intra-district choice
process for the 2002-2003 school year. A letter will be sent home
in Spanish, Armenian and English to the approximately 2300 students who
are affected by the boundary changes in mid-March, informing them of their
rights and options under the new policy.

El 1º. de marzo fue el primer día en que los padres pudieron
regresar sus aplicaciones completadas para la admisión a las tres
escuelas voluntarias o escuelas de selección, Don Benito, Marshall
y Norma Coombs, del Distrito Escolar Unificado de Pasadena.
Las aplicaciones se pueden obtener en Español, Armenio e Inglés
en las oficinas principales de las 31 escuelas del distrito o de la Oficina
de Servicios de Apoyo para el Estudiante, la cual está localizada
en la Oficina 153 del Centro de Educación del PUSD (351 S. Hudson
Avenue, Pasadena.)
Los solicitantes pueden entregar las formas desde ahora hasta el 1º.

debe de poner esos pupitres disponibles para los estudiantes de todo el
distrito. En algunos casos, pueden aplicar más solicitantes
a una escuela particular que los pupitres que haya disponibles en esa escuela,
requiriendo que el distrito conduzca una lotería al azar generada por
computadora para determinar la admisión.
Ahora se les avisará a los solicitantes a principios de junio si han
sido aceptados a una escuela por medio de selección para dentro del
distrito u opción de matrícula abierta. En el pasado,
no se les avisaba hasta mediados de septiembre.
“Todavía tenemos mucho terreno que cubrir, pero yo creo que el período
de notificación temprana demuestra nuestro compromiso para hacer el
proceso más amigable para nuestros clientes,” dice el Dr. Percy Clark,
Jr., Superintendente del PUSD.
Aquellas personas que deseen aplicar para la opción de selección
dentro del distrito en Español, Inglés o Armenio, lo pueden
hacer ya sea obteniendo una aplicación en la oficina principal de las

estudiantes cuya escuela asignada ha cambiado, recibirán preferencia
