Sierra Madre Playhouse
Schedule (8/16/06) Champagne Opening Night Friday for "The Front Page" at Sierra Madre Playhouse “The Front Page” (1928) is a comedy that takes place in the world of newspaper reporting, in the days when it was not implausible for a big city (in this case, Chicago) to have eight daily papers. Hildy Johnson, of the Herald-Examiner, is about to leave Chicago to marry a wonderful young woman and settle down to a lucrative position with an advertising firm in New York. But real reporters have printer’s ink flowing in their veins instead of blood. On the day he is supposed to leave his post at the paper, he stumbles onto the biggest story of his career: Hildy is presented with the opportunity to save a man from the hangman’s noose while overthrowing the regime of the city’s corrupt mayor and sheriff. He enlists the aid of editor Walter Burns in attempting to rescue the convict from death and saving the scoop for the Herald-Examiner. Meanwhile, Hildy’s lovely fiancée (and her mother) are trying to cajole him onto the train to get to his wedding on time. This comedy was written by Ben Hecht (1894-1964) and Charles MacArthur (1895-1956), inspired by their own adventures as reporters. They wrote plays together, but went on to greater success after they formed a motion picture company a few years subsequent to the first production of “The Front Page.” As screenwriters, they received many Oscar ® nominations separately and together. Both won for “The Scoundrel.” Hecht won for “Underworld.” They wrote such classic screenplays as “Gunga Din” and “Wuthering Heights.” MacArthur enjoyed a long marriage to actress Helen Hayes until his death. There were several filmed versions made of “The Front Page,” including the remakes “His Girl Friday” and “Switching Channels.” Patricia Dooley directs the current production of “The Front Page.” Most recently, she directed the very well-received Sierra Madre Playhouse Second Stage production of “Sylvia.” “Sylvia” will be the Playhouse’s January 2006 mainstage attraction. Frank Dooley, who received a Back Stage West Garland Honorable Mention for his performance in the Sierra Madre production of “It Runs In The Family,” plays Hildy Johnson. Nick Lewis plays Walter Burns. The cast also includes: Roxanne Barker, David Calhoun, Verna Chilton, Guy Crawford, Alan Curelop, Jess Flores, John S. Francis, Redda Hareing, Tracy Lynn Jensen, Jerry Marble, Fred Mazie, Robert Olson, Ken Salzman, Tom Sandoval, Barry Schwam, Steve Shaw, Stuart B. Silverman, Nicole Tucker, Tom Vick, and Dean Wood. The opening night performance on August 19 will be preceded at 7:15 p.m. by a Champagne reception with edible delights and beverages. The play runs August 19-September 24, 2005. Fridays and Saturdays at 8, Sundays at 2:30. There will be a Special Thursday 8 p.m. performance on September 22. Admission is $18, students and seniors, $15. Children under 12, $12.
