Award-Winning Poet Chris Abani Speaks at Library  Last Monday evening, October 21, poet Chris Abani  read from his poetry and discussed his experience as a refugee from Nigeria coming to Southern California.  This special event was supported by Poets & Writers, Inc. through a grant it has received from The James Irvine Foundation.  Abani’s first novel, Masters of the Board, published in 1985, landed him in a Nigerian prison at the age of eighteen.  He fled Nigeria in 1991.  His experiences as a political prisoner and of civil war in his homeland are articulated in a highly personal and explicit way in his continued writing, for which he has won praise and awards.  For his recent book of poems, Kalakuta Republic, Abani was named “Writer in Exile” by P.E.N. West and awarded the PEN USA West Freedom-to-Write Award for poetry in 2001.  He also received a prestigious 2001 Prince Claus Award, acknowledging him as “a promising poet and a persuasive humanist, whose work has universal resonance.”  Above photo courtesy of Sierra Madre Public Library

LIBRARY OFFERS “WRITE YOUR MEMORIES”  WORKSHOP

The Sierra Madre Library is offering a workshop in memory writing starting Thursday evening, August 29, and continuing for six Thursday evenings through October 3.  The workshop, which is free and open to the public, will meet from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Please call the Library at (626) 355-7186 to sign up.

This is the second program in SIERRA MADRE READS “THE GRAPES OF WRATH,” part of a statewide project designed to strengthen California communities by bringing people together to read and discuss John Steinbeck’s great work of literature in the context of their own community and personal history.  Libraries around California are encouraging patrons to read the book this summer in anticipation of library events planned in October to honor the one-hundredth anniversary of Steinbeck’s birthday.

James Kincaid – Sierra Madre resident, Library trustee, author, and professor of English at the University of Southern California – will conduct the workshop, which will focus on the participants’ stories of coming to California and/or Sierra Madre.

Kincaid says, “Surveys tell us that most Californians feel dissociated from their community, their neighbors, and their own lives.  Story sharing is an excellent way to rebuild community. This relaxed no-pressure workshop is designed as an introduction to fun storytelling and listening, to encourage us all to feel that we are already writers and storytellers. We will work together on crafting our individual stories, making them effective and strong.  All we need is pencil and paper – and each other.”

SIERRA MADRE READS THE GRAPES OF WRATH is part of the state-wide  “California Stories: The Grapes of Wrath,” a project of the California Council for the Humanities in partnership with the California Center for the Book and the California State Library, and is supported in part by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act, administered in California by the State Librarian, and by Penguin Books.

The Sierra Madre Public Library is located at 440 W. Sierra Madre Boulevard in Sierra Madre.  For further information on Library services and programs please visit the Library’s web site at www.sierramadre.lib.ca.us or call the Library at (626) 355-7186 after 11 a.m.
