Continuation of Metro Gold Line Press Release

The opening of the Metro Gold Line expands Metro Rail to 73.1-miles. The Metro Gold Line joins two existing light rail lines (Metro Blue and Green Lines) and a subway (Metro Red Line) that crisscross portions of Los Angeles County from Long Beach to Los Angeles, Redondo Beach, Norwalk, Hollywood, Universal City, and North Hollywood as well as Pasadena.  "The Metro Gold Line has been a long-awaited project that, with its opening, will link communities to the rest of the Metro Rail system by providing a real transportation alternative,” said L.A. County Supervisor and MTA Board Member Gloria Molina. “Early next year, we hope to break ground extending the Gold Line from Union Station to East Los Angeles.”  In the first year of operation, the Metro Gold Line is expected to carry between 26,000 and 32,000 average weekday boarding passengers. Cost of the system including rail cars and various improvements to the line is estimated at $859 million.  “The Gold Line is a vital link in the County’s multi-modal transportation system – efficiently serving the needs of commuters in Los Angeles, Chinatown, Lincoln Heights, Highland Park, South Pasadena and Pasadena,” said L.A. County Supervisor and MTA Board Member Michael Antonovich.  The 13.7-mile Metro Gold Line has 13 stations and will operate every 10 minutes on weekdays during peak morning and afternoon rush hours. Trains will then operate every 12-minute during the mid-day and every 20-minutes during the late night hours. On the weekends, early morning and late night trains will operate every 20 minutes. Midday service until approximately 7 p.m. will operate every 12 minutes. The hours of operation will be from 3:35 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week.   “Rain or shine, commuters using the Metro Gold Line can expect to get from East Pasadena to downtown Los Angeles and vice versa in approximately 36 minutes without the traffic hassles of the Pasadena and 210 Freeways,” said MTA CEO Roger Snoble.  Fares for the Metro Gold line will be the same as all MTA-operated Metro Bus and Metro Rail trains costing just $1.35 one-way (cash) or 90 cents using a pre-purchased discount token. Monthly passes good for unlimited travel are $42.  The Metro Gold Line will use 26 state-of-the-art rail cars. Each rail car costs $3.75 million. Each train car seats 76 passengers. During rush hours, the scheduled capacity for each car is a total of 144 passengers including standees. When service starts, MTA expects to utilize 39 full-time train operators and two part-time operators. MTA plans to operate two car trains on the Metro Gold Line.  The Metro Gold Line was constructed by the Los Angeles to Pasadena Metro Blue Line Construction Authority. Testing of the system was turned over to the MTA in mid-April. MTA plans to conduct extensive pre-revenue testing up to the public opening on July 26.  With the addition of the Metro Gold Line, MTA’s Metro Rail system spans many communities and extends the reach of millions of Southern Californians and tourists to a host of “must see” attractions located within walking distance of many Metro Rail stations.  In Pasadena for example, patrons using the new Metro Gold Line can easily access various shopping districts, parks, Pasadena City College, California Institute of Technology, Huntington Library and Gardens, various hotels, business centers, Colorado Boulevard, Old Pasadena, Pacific Asia Museum, Pasadena Museum of History, Norton Simon Museum, Pasadena Jazz Institute, the Ice House and Playhouse District.  Additional points of interest along the Metro Gold Line corridor include Paseo Colorado Shopping Center, Pasadena City Hall, and Civic Auditorium, Huntington Memorial Hospital, Meridian Ironworks Museum, Carnegie Library, Arroyo Seco Regional Library, Highland Park Recreation Center, Highland Theater, Southwest Museum, Heritage Museum Square, Rock Rose Gallery, Broadway Historic Business District in Lincoln Heights, Chinatown, Olvera Street and Union Station in downtown Los Angeles.  From there, a quick transfer to the Metro Red Line subway is your ticket to unlimited adventures exploring downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Universal City or the North Hollywood Arts District. Or perhaps a ride on the Metro Blue Line will take patrons to sporting events at Staples Center, Watts Towers, or downtown Long Beach for a visit to the Queen Mary, Aquarium of the Pacific, or take the Metro Green Line to LAX, Norwalk, or Redondo Beach.  Many Metro Bus improvements also have been made in the San Gabriel Valley to better serve the Metro Gold Line providing direct bus service to various stations along the alignment.  In addition parking is available around some Metro Gold Line stations including a 1,000 space parking structure adjacent to the Sierra Madre Villa Metro Gold Line station in East Pasadena. In downtown Los Angeles at Union Station approximately 1,100 paid parking spaces are available. Limited parking spaces are provided at Lincoln Heights/Cypress Park station (100), Heritage Square/Arroyo station (145), Fillmore station (160), and the Del Mar Station (600). In addition, MTA is working to secure some parking adjacent to the Lake Avenue station.  This latest expansion of the Metro Rail system will give transit dependent commuters, tourists and others easy and convenient access to major job centers, government, schools, hospitals, shopping, sports, entertainment and cultural venues throughout Los Angeles County.  For more details about the Metro Rail and Metro Bus system, including access to an interactive trip planner, check out MTA’s web site at www.mta.net or call 1-800-C-O-M-M-U-T-E.

The American Red Cross Offers Tips & Treats for a Safe Halloween

PASADENA, CA-- As witches, goblins and super-heroes descend on neighborhoods across the San Gabriel Valley, the American Red Cross offers parents some safety tips to help prepare their children for a safe and fun-filled trick-or-treat holiday.  Halloween should be filled with surprise and enjoyment, and following some common sense practices can keep events safer and more fun.  Most Halloween injuries are preventable, if parents and children take some simple precautions.  The following “lucky 13” safety tips are for parents to share with their trick-or-treaters to prevent injuries at Halloween.

Red Cross Safety Tips:

  1. Plan your route and share it with your family.  If possible, have an adult go with you.

  2. Wear light-colored or reflective-type clothing so you are more visible.  Put reflective tape on bikes, scooters, skateboards, and brooms, too!

  3. Visit homes that have the porch light on.

  4. Use face paint rather than masks or things that will cover your eyes.

  5. Cross the street only at corners.

  6. Look both ways before crossing the street to check for cars, trucks and low-flying

  7. brooms.

  8. Don’t hide or cross the street between parked cars.

  9. Walk, slither, and sneak on sidewalks, not in the street.

  10. Carry a flashlight to light your way.

  11. Keep away from open fires and candles.  (Costumes can be extremely flammable.)

  12. Accept treats at the door and never go into a stranger’s house.

  13. Be cautious of strangers and animals.

  14. Have a grown-up inspect your treats before eating.  And don’t eat candy if the package is already opened.  Small, hard pieces of candy are a choking hazard for young children.

The American Red Cross is the largest humanitarian organization in the United States that helps people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.

“The last of the great Romantic pianists,” “One of the 20th Century’s greatest pianists.”  Such glowing raves appropriately describe Earl Wild, who will perform at Shumei Hall located at 2430 E, Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena, on Sunday, November 17, 2002 at 3 pm.  This November appearance marks Mr. Wild’s return to Pasadena after serving earlier this spring as one of the jurors in the acclaimed Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition.

Born in 1915 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1937, Mr. Wild was appointed staff assistant and soloist to the NBC Symphony Orchestra under the great maestro Arturo Toscanini.  Since this auspicious breakthrough, this “super virtuoso” (as some critics have called him) has became a legendary musical figure, whose epic performances over the past seven decades, have dazzled world audiences, including six American Presidents.

Called one of “the finest transcribers of our time” and certainly one of our most recorded pianists, Mr. Wild made his first recording in 1937 for RCA.  Sixty years and twenty recording labels later, in 1997, Mr. Wild received a GRAMMY for his brilliant disc devoted entirely to virtuoso piano transcriptions entitled, “Earl Wild-The Romantic Master”

On what promises to be a memorable afternoon, Mr. Wild will perform Adagio (Marcello/Wild), Sonata in F minor K. 332 (Mozart), 32 Variations in C minor (Beethoven), Rondo Capriccioso (Mendelssohn) as well as pieces by Chopin and Liszt.

ROSEMARY CHILDREN’S SERVICES HOLDS FOSTER PARENTING ORIENTATION

Pasadena, California—October 4, 2002—Rosemary Children’s Services Foster Family Agency (FFA) begins its Foster Parent Orientation and Training Sessions, Saturday, November 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at 440 South Cataract Avenue, Suite J in San Dimas. The four consecutive sessions begin November 2 and end on November 23.

“Potential foster parents need to call our toll free telephone number for an initial screening,” says Althea Bassett, foster care director, Rosemary Children’s Services.  “We explore whether foster parenting is right for the adult. If so, we guide them through the training and certification process. Once a child and foster parent are united, Rosemary provides a stipend to help provide for each child. ”

The FFA provides on site babysitting during training, for parents who have children, and a continental breakfast. The agency recruits, trains and certifies foster parents and places children through the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services. Bassett explains that newly certified parents could foster a child of any age.

“We desperately need more potential foster parents because we oversee children of all ages. When no certified foster parent is available, the children are placed in a children’s group home,” adds Bassett. “We hope adults will share their homes with foster children, particularly this close to the holiday season. It’s much better for them to be in a home environment.”

For more information about foster parenting, contact Deborah Contreras, recruiter for Rosemary at 1-888-546-1066.

Rosemary manages four main programs. Masters’ level social workers provide case management services to foster children for their emotional, educational and medical needs through the Foster Family program. In addition, Rosemary recruits, trains and certifies foster families. The Residential program gives adolescent girls a place to call home and receive emotional and physical help. The Non-Public School provides secondary education for girls ages 13 to 17 from California credentialed special education teachers. Finally, the Day Rehabilitation Services program provides 24-hour mental health services for teens coming from dysfunctional environments. In 2001, Rosemary Children’s Services gave aid to nearly 500 children.

Founded in 1920, Rosemary Children’s Services, a state licensed nonprofit organization, provides educational, medical, emotional and psychological support to abused, neglected or abandoned children. The organization owns and operates four homes that house six teen girls each. The Cottage, part of the Residential Program, houses 19 girls. With facilities in Pasadena, South Pasadena and San Dimas, Rosemary is headquartered at 36 South Kinneloa Avenue, Suite 200, Pasadena, California.

FRIENDS OF FOOTHILL FAMILY SPONSOR BACKPACK PROGRAM

(San Gabriel Valley)            Approximately 25 children of Friends’ members and their parents,  took the day from summer play to pack backpacks for the Friends of Foothill Family’s second annual Back-to-School Backpack Program.  The group outdid themselves this year and packed over 200 new backpacks to the brim with school supplies.

bckpck.jpg (68576 bytes)Friends’ members, Lynda Stubblefield and Susan Presley co-chaired the big day and procured backpacks in all colors, calculators, binders, notebook paper, folders glue, markers, pencils and pencils and a list of other supplies to fill the backpacks.  At one point the filled backpacks had been piled so high that an avalanche started to occur. Numerous supporters of Friends of Foothill and Foothill Family Service contributed thousands of dollars to make the event a success.   Greg Stubblefield of Enterprise Car Rental generously donated the crates of notebook paper used to fill the backpack binders.

Friends’ president, Robyn Manzini, encouraged members to get their children involved in giving back to their community.  As a thank you, Jackie Landy, Foothill Director of Development, presented each child with a “Kids Helping Kids” ribbon.  One nine year old participant, Kenny Caldwell, said the “ribbon means more to me than my swim event ribbon.”

The children packed the backpacks so enthusiastically that when one mother, Sharon Mayhew, arrived late with her eager children, the work had all been done.   Friends quickly signed the youngsters up for next summer’s program.  The mission of Foothill Family Service is to strengthen and support children, adults, and families and help them lead productive lives in our community.  Foothill Family and Friends are committed to the prevention and treatment of child abuse, domestic violence, school failure, teen pregnancy, and school violence.  Friends of Foothill Family was formed three years ago to support Foothill Family Service.  Friends now counts over 100 community women as active members.

AMERICAN RED CROSS TO PILOT COMPANION CORPS PROGRAM TO HOMEBOUND ELDERLY

PASADENA, CA - The San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross has been awarded a $24,424 grant by the Governor’s Office On Service and Volunteerism (GOSERV).

“The purpose of this planning grant is to develop a program that uses trained AmeriCorps (funded by the Corporation for National Service) and volunteers to provide companionship services to homebound elderly.  The services are designed to increase quality of life, reduce isolation and keep our population living in their own homes longer,” states Angie Turner, Chief Operating Officer at the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross.

In addition to the development of new and existing partnerships and the definition of their role in the Companion Corps., the planning grant will allow the San Gabriel Valley Chapter to survey and identify companionship services preferred by seniors.  The current Red Cross Meals On Wheels recipients will be the target of such surveys.  Companionship services to be considered are light housework, light yard work, personal calls, letter writing services, disaster preparedness education and more.  Surveys will prioritize the services for inclusion in an operating grant. The Red Cross is partnering with other agencies serving the aging population in the San Gabriel Valley.  These agencies include: American Red Cross Arcadia Chapter, City of Duarte, Jackie Robinson Center, Pasadena Senior Center, Altadena Senior Center, Santa Anita Family Service, YWCA of San Gabriel Valley, City of Glendora (La Fetra Center), RSVP - YMCA/Greater Whittier, Center For Aging Resources and City of West Covina.  For further information please call 626-331-8266.
