As the story goes, Bud lived at the top of a long, uphill driveway. He and his wife Donna Mae were disappointed when nobody came for Halloween. He started lining his driveway with lit, carved pumpkins. He would also line the garden wall along the driveway with pennies for the children to pick up on their way up the hill. Before long he and his son were putting pumpkins throughout the yard. I’ve heard one year they had close to 500 pumpkins. In time, other folks on his block started decorating for Halloween, not always with pumpkins. Around this time, they also started carving the giant pumpkins, generally grown by their neighbor two doors down, Doug Parker. For years now, crowds in the thousands show up on their block each year to see what the residents have done.
