Botanical
Art Show Scheduled at Arboretum of Los Angeles County
April 20
through April 28
The Botanical
Artists Guild of Southern California will present a group show
of botanical
watercolor paintings and drawings at the Arboretum of Los
Angeles County.
The exhibit will also include a demonstration of botanical
art techniques.
The show
will run from 9:30 am until 4:30 pm daily from Saturday, April 20,
through Sunday,
April 28, 2002. A lecture and demonstration of botanical
watercolor
techniques will be presented on Sunday, April 21 from 11:30 am to
1:30 pm.
Botanical
art is a centuries-old form of illustration showing the structure
and growth
patterns of plants. The number of galleries and shows featuring
contemporary
botanical art has grown, reflecting a resurgence of interest in
the art form.
Prominent
shows now include an international exhibition sponsored in New
York each
year by the American Society of Botanical Artists and the
Horticultural
Society of New York. A second international show is held at
the Carnegie
Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Certificate programs in
botanical
art are offered by the New York Botanical Gardens, Denver
Botanical
Gardens, and the Chelsea Physic Garden in London.
In Los Angeles
County, the Los Angeles Arboretum Foundation in Arcadia and
Otis College
of Art and Design are among the institutions currently offering
botanical
drawing and painting classes.
The Botanical
Artists Guild of Southern California is a chapter of the
American
Society of Botanical Artists, a group of more than 800 artists,
scholars
and collectors, headquartered in New York City.
The
Arboretum is located at 301 N. Baldwin Avenue, Arcadia CA 91007-2697.
Phone: (626)
821-3222. To attend the botanical art show, guests must pay the
Arboretum¹s
general admission fee: $5 for adults, $3 for seniors and
