Posted 2/17/14 – This Thursday, Feb. 20th, from 7 to 9pm as part of the Sierra Madre Public Library’s One Book, One City event, the Sierra Madre Woman’s Club and the Sierra Madre Historical Preservation Society will team up for a special evening remember WWI, the subject of “Maisie Dobbs” the book chosen by the Library for One Book, One City The theme of the evening is “Life and Surprises in Sierra Madre During World War I.” On tap as part of the celebration will be discussion and book signing by Michele Zack, author of the Historical Preservation Society’s book “Southern California Story: Seeking the Better Life in Sierra Madre.” Also part of the evening will be an opportunity to listen to WWI era music on the phonographs from the era upon which they were originally played, courtesy of antique phonograph collector Jim Constantian.
The event is also an opportunity to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the historic Essick House, which the Woman’s Club has used as their clubhouse since 1974. As such, the celebration will also include recognition of the 40th anniversary of the Clubhouse’s dedication to community service. The community is invited to attend, light refreshments will be served.
